HAMUA Opening with tho Institute song the September mooting of the Hamua Institute uresided over by Mrs Ilobbs, president, was fairly woll attended by members. A motion of condolence was passed with Mrs Austin in the loss of her mother and Mr Hamilton in the loss of his wife, members standing in silence. Mrs Paterson, Dominion president, was tho guest of tho afternoon. Mrs Hobbs, on behalf of tho Institute, welcomed Mrs Paterson in a neat speech and presented her with a beautiful posy of freosias specially sent from Hastings. After afternoon tea Mrs Paterson gave an interesting address on the conference,. Tho competition for a vase of spring florvers brought forth a beautiful display which was divided into two classes, Mrs Paterson kindly consenting to judge. Miss K. Smith with a beautiful vase of Japonica and May and Miss J. Sorenson with a vase of primula proved to be the winners. During the afternoon, two playettes were acted by senior and junior girls of the play reading circle. Tho hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs W. J. Smith and Misses K. Smith and P. Ryan.

HOROEKA At the monthly meeting of the Horooka W.I. held at the homo of Mrs. W. Lunt there was a large attendance of members over which Mrs Lunt presided. Several visitors wore given a hearty welcome among whom was Mrs Harrison of Otaki, a noted demonstrator, who had on view a wonderful assortment of handcrafts. She explained how various articles were made and demonstrated how to make pine needle baskets. White elephant parcels were much enjoyed, also a musical parcel arranged by Mrs Lunt and won by Mrs Urquhart. The competition for a child’s toy was judged by Mrs Harrison, Mrs A. G-illam coming iirst with a doll’s bed and Mrs Lunt second with a golly wog. Mrs Harrison gave two specials, these being won by Mrs Erame with Woeful Willey and Mrs Urquhart with a doll’s cradle. T.ho hostesses were Mrs Burling, Miss Holden and Miss Gillam. Hearty votes of thanks were givon Mrs Harrison and Mrs Lunt.

PONGAROA The Pongaroa Women’s Institute held its September meeting in tho Masonic hall with M.'rs Pickett presiding and with a large number of members, friends and school children from Rakanui and Pongaroa present. It was decided to write Miss Maddever of Wellington to demonstrate cake-icing. Tho institute has decided to send butter as a Christmas gift to the link in England. Tho parcel for the mission was withheld because all members had not brought their garments in. Mrs Harrison, who demonstrated pine needle baskets and trays, also lace wood plait, from which can be made very pretty pouchettes. Miss E. Kent and Miss M. Pickett played a pianoforte duct which was greatly appreciated. The hostesses, Mesdames Jensen, Tlieed and Miss O. Teoman served a dainty afternoon tea. A vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Harrison for her very interesting demonstration, and to tho hostesses.

NEW INSTITUTE PORMED AT RA.KATJNTJI. At a meeting of ladies held at Rakaunui on September 15, it was decided to form a Women’s Institute. Mrs Harrison, voluntary organiser, was present, and outlined the aims and objects of the movement. From those present tho following committee was elected;—President, Mrs. R. B. Robertson; Vice-president, Mesdames -Woodhouse and Kent; Secretary, Miss B. Kent; Miss Carty, Miss Pickett, and Miss E. Yeoman. It was decided to hold the meetings on the first Wednesclay of each month. Mrs. Harrison had brought with her a collection of soft toys which were greatly admired and she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
