Obituary
DIRS. ELIZABETH BURLING. The death has occurred at Shannon at the age of 88 of a prominent early settler of the Wairarapa and Manawatu districts, Mrs. Elizabeth Burling. Mrs. Burling came from England with her parents to Australia and afterward to New Zealand at the age of seven years, and had resided in New Zealand ever since. She was married in Eeatherston in 1860 to the late Mr. Arthur Burling. On their way home they had to swim, their horses across the Tauherenikau river, and Mrs. Burling narrowly escaped being drowned, having fallen off her horse. She was rescued by her husband. After living for a time at AVestern Lake, they moved to Tauherenikau. .From there they went to Peep-o ’-Day, near Eketahuna, thence to Waterfalls, Waikanae, and finally to Ashhurst. The late Mrs. Burling was a real friend to those in need. She and the late Mr. Arthur Burling were most hospitable. Her surviving family consists of Mrs. Burling, Mastcrton; Mrs. Small, Lower Hutt; Mrs. William Gooding, Featherston; Mrs. AV. Morris, Te Awamutu; Mrs. J. Robbie, Palmerston North; Messrs. H. Burling, Tokoroa; Mrs. Alfred Burling, AVaihaha, Bay of Islands; Mr. A. Burling, Shannon; and Mr. Len Burling, AVaikanae. Her only surviving brother is Mr. Charles Gooding, Otaki.
