SOUTHLAND TOO GOOD FOR HAWKE’S BAY

Home Team Beaten by 26 to 11 WINNERS INDULGE IN SPECTACULAR RUSHES Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Last Niglit. Ia a good, open exhibition of liugby at Hastings this afternoon, the touring Southland representatives defeated Hawke’s Bay by 2G points to 11. The match was played at a fast pace throughout, a feature being the handling of the whole of the Southland team, both backs and forwards indulging in many spectacular rushes. The visiting forwards were much heavier and taller than the opposing vanfuard aud secured the ball from SU per cent, of the scrums and line-outs, thus giving their backs every opportunity. A factor which was largely responsible for the large score by Southland was w&ak tackling on the part, of both the Bay backs and forwards. Time and again one or two of the visiting players ran right through the home team. When the Bay men did tackle, they went high and were easily thrown off by the big visiting forwards. Playing wdth the wdnd in the first spell, Southland took all before them and had Bay defending almost continuously, their forwards completely overshadowing the homesters both in light and looso play. Tho visitors threw the ball about very freely aud the home team had to work hard to keep its line intact. The visitors had their reward, when, after a number of players had handled. Berry went across in a handy position. Sharp o converted. Except for one or two spasmodic bursts, Bay were defending for the rest of the spell, having their line crossed twice, Mitchell and George scoring tries. Sharpe converted both. Shortly before the bell, from a passing rush, Apsey secured and outpacing the opposition scored a good try in the corner for Bay. The kick failed.

After tho interval the homesters were a vastly different team, immediately, making the play in the visitors’ 25. Here Le Quesne claimed a mark and from the side-line kicked a goal with a drop-kick. Bay continued to have the better of the game, although their tackling was still weak and their forwards still not securing, the ball. After pressing for some time, Steere crossed near the posts, for Bradley to convert. "With ten minutes to go and the score 15—11, matters seemed promising for Bay, but Southland suddenly launched an attack, from which Galt scored an unconverted try. A few minutes later, first Mitchell crossed, for Sharpe to convert, and then Berry, tho final score reading 26—11.
