Social and Dance at Stanway

On Wednesday & most successful and enjoyable social and dance, in which tho Stanway Women’s Institute cooperated, was held in the hall under the auspices of! tho . Farmers’ Union. Mcsdames E. Eossor, E. Cockburn, A. Marshall and Misses K. Miles and Nola Jeffcrios were responsible for the decoration of the stage, that presented an especially attractive appearance with its artistic arrangement of poach blossom, flowering currant, red gum, and spring blooms. A trio of artists from 2ZO studio, Palmerston North, Miss Doreen Saunders (Aunt Botty), Miss Haig and Mr Tabor, although engaged to entertain in a district manjs miles distant, most generously visited Stanway first to assist with the programme that occupied tho evoning uutil supper time. Vocal duots, humorous recitations and monologues by these woll-lcnown artists, were tremendously appreciated and great delight in each item was evidenced by tho very large audience, to whom their entertainment was a rare treat. Miss Enid Boach, of Feilding, was the accompanist. Songs by Miss Myrtle Guy (Feilding) and Miss Alison Green and Mr C. Whiteman (Stanway) also gave much pleasure. Following the programme Mrs A. L. Dormer (president of tho local W. 1.) presented tho trophies in connection with tho fanners’ root-growing competition, the speech in reference to same being niado by Mr J. H. Mason. Mr Mason, in congratulating the winners, Mr A. J. Baxter, of Cameron’s line, and Messrs Minson and Marshall, of Waituna, mentioned that the Sutton cup had been won outright by Mr. Baxter, who had secured not only Ist place .in.- tho competition but second as well. His weights were the highest per aero so far recorded in the district, the first being 103 ton 3 and the second 100.6 tons. In being the winners of the combined mangold and swede crops, Messrs Minson and Marshall had annexed the trophy donated by Mr Wattie Booth, of Cheltenham. Mr Mason warmly thanked the ladies of the W.I. for their assistance during the evening, and the delicious supper they had so kindly provided, and also extended special thanks to the entertainers from 2ZO. Mr Noel Penny, (secretary of the Farmers’ Union), who had opened the proceedings with a very pleasing little speech, referring to the aunts and uncles of 2ZO, lent considerable help during the function, and dance music was played by Mrs P. K. Simpson, Mr E. Christian and M. H. Hooper. Avery happy occasion was brought to an end shortly after midnight, by the singing of "Auld Lang Syne.”
