Mr Arch. McNicol, Of Dannevirke, Passes
JOURNALIST AND EX-M.P. Per Press Association. DANNEVIRKE, Aug. 31. The death occurred with tragic suddenness this morning at his home from heart failure of Mr Archibald M. MeNicol, managirg editor of the Dannevirke Evening News for many years. Deceased played a prominent part in town and district affairs for the last 25 years and was universally respected. He leaves a widow and three daughters.
The late Mr McNicol was born at Wailiola in 1878, a son of the Rev. John McNicol, and was educated at tho Union Street School, Dunedin. On leaving school lie joined the Otago Daily Times as mining reporter, subsequently becoming chief reporter on the staff of the Daily Telegraph r.t Napier. Since 1909 he has been managing editor of the Dannevirke News. Mr McNicol took a leading part in the organising of country newspapers and was chairman of the No. 111. Section of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association, whom he represented at the Empiro Press Union Conference in London in 1930. He was also a director of the Press Association. Ho represented the Pahiatua electorate in Parliament from 1919 to 1922, and was then defeated by the Hon. E. A. Ransom.
The country press of the Dominion has suffered a double loss in the past week, the death of Mr W. C. Cargill, of Morrinsvillc, removing another newspaper man who had done a very great deal towards the organisation of the smaller newspapers and the improvement of the printing trade.
