prom Our Own Correspondent. The anniversary social of the Methodist Church was .held on Friday last.' There was a good attendance in spite of the fact that several were prevented from patronising the function owing to an epidemic of influenza which prevails. The Kev. W. B. Pickering presided and his usual happy manner added charm to the already attractive programme which had been prepared by Misses X). Ebbett and R. Groves. This comprised vocal and instrumental items with games and competitions interspersed and was heartily enjoyed by all present. The social commenced (With all present standing to sing- an old-time Methodist hymn. This was followed by a short prayer by the Rev.’ Mr. Pickering, who also spoke of the work which had been done in the past by the early settlers in building and caring for the church, and upon the younger members to revere the memory of those pioneers and to continue on in the good work which they had begun. Those who contributed to the programme were: Miss D. Ebbett, - violin solos; Miss Joyce Ebbett, pianoforte solos; songs were given by Miss D. Ebbett and Messrs H. R. Ogg and W. Greaves; recitations by Miss A. M. Sargent and Lorene Gordon, Evelyn Groves and Malcolm.Angove. Items by the junior choir under the baton of Miss D. Ebbett were much appreciated. Community singing was entered into with spirit, ably led by Mr. H. R. Ogg. A dialogue performed by Mrs. R. Dagg and Misses A. Sargent and E. Sowry created a good deal of enjoyment. A competition in which the entrants were required to play a tune on the piano whilst blindfolded, caused much amusement and was won by Miss Joyce Ebbett, Miss Myrtle Groves being placed second. Messrs Ogg and Greaves kindly acted as adjudicators for this competition. The musical stick competition was won by Miss D. Day with Mr. Fred Clark runner-up. Musioal accompaniments were played by Mrs. H. R. Ogg and Misses R. Groves, D. Ebbett, D. Day and M. Clark. A dainty supper was served by the ladies and a happy gathering terminated at about midnight with the singing of the Doxology and the Benediction. Continuing the anniversary celebrations, services were held in the church on Sunday. The afternoon service was conducted by the Rev. K. E. Warren at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Pahiatua, and the evening service by the Rev. W. B .Pickering, also at Pahiatua. There was a good attendance at each and the junior choir sang special hymns, whilst at the evening service a solo was rendered by Miss Daphne Ebbett. Mrs. W. Simpson, of Faekalcariki, with her daughter Ruth, is the guest of her mother, Mrs. F. Rowse. Mrs. K. Dagg, of Thurana Valley, and her three children are on a visit to Mrs. Dagg’s mother, Mrs. Tl. Sowry. Mrs. J. Walker, of Hawera, is visiting her sister, Mrs. H. L. Eddie, and is accompanied by her small son. Mrs. A. Sowry is spending a holiday as the guest of Mrs. H. Sowry. Mrs. J. Vile was a visitor to the district at the week-end for the Methodist anniversary. The white butterfly has already made its appearance here, which is lour months earlier than when it was first noticed last year. Rifle Club. The final shoot of the Miniature Rifle Club was held on Monday evening when the scoring was of a fairly high order, several possibles being put on. The scores •svere:—A. Tait 70, 70—140; F. Sargent 66, 66—132, Miss Ebbett 65, 67—132; W. Day 63, 68—131; C. Davis 62, 63—125; F. Towner 62, 62 —124. A return match with the Eketahuna Club was fired on Monday evening. This being a postal match the scores will ap- , pear later. The following shootists were , prize winners in the annual championship matches of the New Zealand Miniature Rifle Association:—Mrs. R. Foss and Messrs R. McKenzie, S. Holdaway, W. : Eising and J. Pleayns.
