“HIS WIFE’S MOTHER’’ An ingenious plan to placate Henry Hagen’s mother-in-law, devised by Joy, a valet and, his master, Eustace, Henry’s pal, seemed simple enough for anyone to carry through—but oh,, what a tangled web they weave! In ‘‘His Wife’s Mother,” the new comedy at the Tivoli Theatre-this week, from the very commencement things go wrong. The girl who is threatening to Kjsoil Henry’s matrimonial happiness proves to be none other than Eustace’s fiancee who has thrown him over for “the only man in all the world’’ —Henry! Then mother-in-law insists upon seeing the double whom Henry has invented for his alibi. Henry arranges for her to visit Eustace’s country cottage, rented by the supposed double, managing to install himself before she arrives, thus welcoming her as his other self, and persuades her to stay the night in order that Eustace can burst in the next morning with the news of Henry’s imminent arrival. Eustace, who is sleeping in the garage, mistakes his cue, and bursts in eight hours too soon, and mother-in-law refuses to stay thG night until Joy, the valet, disgused as a German crook, has convinced her that it is dangerous to leave the house. However, eventually, all ends well with Henry restored to his rtdfe and Eustace looking forward to a peaceful and happy future. A matinee will be held this afternoon.
