WELLINGTON RACING CLUB

A net profit for the year of £297 19s sd, after making provision for depreciation of assets to the extent of £2500, is shown in the report and balancesheet to bo presented to members of tho Wellington Racing Club, at the annual meeting on Monday, September HUnder ruling circumstances the stewards report that they are well satisfied with such an outcome of the year’s operations, but emphasise that care and economy must continue to be exercised. During the year the sum of £18,805 was given in stakes, and the Government taxation amounted to £25,217 3s 7d. Interest absorbed £5910 6s lOd, and maintenance and improvements £2S7S 3s Id.

Receipts included £6756 13s lOd from gates and railways, £2170 7s from members’ subscriptions and entrance fees, £5239 from nomination, acceptance fees and forfeits, and £2062 from privileges. Tho property and buildings a,re assessed at £119,790.

The stewards’ report states that despite the financial depression the revenue showed a substantial increase on last year, while at the same time further reductions in overhead and general expenses had been effected. The satisfactory financial result -was very largely duo to the club’s adoption of the winnand-placo system of dividends, which was in operation at three of the four meetings held during the year. The installation of the system necessarily involved the club in certain expenditure, which, however, was much less than might reasonably have been expected, and was fully justified not only by the financial return to the club, but also by the great convenience to patrons. RACEHORSES DESTROYED ACCIDENT AT WANGANUI Gentility, the three-yea T-old filly by Grand Knight—Civility, had to be destroyed at Wanganui last week as the result of staking herself very badly. She was being given slow, work, when she suddenly reared up and swerved, landing on the rails, which broke, and she was so seriously cut about with the jagged ends that she had to bo shot. Gentility bore a striking resemblanco to Civility in colour, conformation and in tho way she handled herself, and she gave plenty of promise. She was leased by Drank Lind, her trainer, and appeared certain to prove a kigh-clas3 performer, so that her loss is a serious one. End of General Lu. General Lu, who broke down while working at Ellerslio on Tuesday last, t.has been dostaoged*

Reports from Hastings indicate that Gold Trail is not galloping as well as she might, and the proposed Sydney trip does not look like being undertaken. The only meetings this week will be the postponed Hawke’s Bay Hunt Meeting and the Auckland Trfotting Club’s First Spring Meeting, both next Saturday. The Hawke’s Bay Trotting Club has been granted permission to hold its Spring meeting on the Hutt Park course, and the fixture has ben set down for Saturday, September 16, the week following the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting. Noisy Night is the name that has been claimed for Ringing Cheer’s yearling full-brother. They are both by Hunting Song from Smoke Concert. It is understood tha the jockey, 11. E. Goldfinch, whose twelve months’ disqualification over the Royal Survey case expired last- October, is to be granted a conditional riding licence for the next three months. The Foxton Racing Club advises that the licensing and dates sub-committee of the Racing Conference executive has granted it permission to hold its first meeting this season on September 30 next in lieu of December 16, the date originally claimed and granted.
