MEETING- OF COUNCIL The Palmerston North City Council met last evening. Present: Tho Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford), Crs. J. Ilodgens, W. B, Cameron, H. B. Free, E. L. C. Aitchison, W. Mouldey and A. A. Langley. Leave of absence was granted Crs. Tremaine and Brown, who are indisposed. Erection of Stop Bank The Hospital Board wrote advising that it was considering the question of the erection of a stop bank along the bank of the Manawatu river on the board's farm property adjacent to the septic tank at Awapuni, and asking that the council agree to the erection of same on the understanding that the work (to be carried out by No. 5 labour) will be submitted for the approval of the city engineer.—lt was resolved to agree to the erection of the stop bank on condition that the city engineer approves of the work to be done and that the council be indemnified by the board in the matter of any possible claim from Mr. Belling, owner of the adjoining property. Water Mains Reticulation The engineer submitted a schedule of streets in which one inch and two incho mains are at present in use and Mr. Hughes stated verbally that 74 chains of fourVinch pipe was in stock. —lt was therefore decided that four inch mains bo laid in Karina terrace for a distance of IS chains, Boundary road 22 chains, Matamau street five chains, Aroha street 20 chains, and Marne street nine chains. Planting of Sand DanesThe' Commissioner of Crown Lands forwarded portion of a lithograph showing an area of approximately 300 acres on the coast line which might be available to the council for the purpose of tree planting. —Received. Court Fees The city solicitors forwarded an account from Oram, Gabbard and Yortt for £3O 15/- covering fee £26 5/- and travelling expenses £4 10/- incurred in attending the hearing of the case before the Hull Court in Wellington, relative to half cost of footways, and advised that judgment was given for the defendants (Messrs Waghorn and Weightman) and they were allowed Magistrate’3 Court costs totalling £3 3/-. The city solicitors further stated that the fee agreed upon between Mr. Oram and Mr. Cooper was 20 guineas and not 25 guineas. The solicitor for the defendants in a memo to Cooper, Eaplcy and Ruther'furd, stated that when they agreed oo the 20 guineas as tho fee, they did not contemplate having to argue the matter before the Full Court in Wellington.— It was resolved that the fee of 20 guineas and the Magistrate’s Court costs amounting to £3 3/- be passed for payment.
