At Forest Hills Mrs Helen WillsMoody, by a narrow margin, defeated Miss Betty Nuthall (England) in one of the most tenso matches at the current women’s national tournament. The Englishwoman’s victory in the first set was sensational. Her drives wero unusually hard and sko played desperately for every point, her backhand and service functioning perfectly. Airs Wills-Moody appeared slow and off her game. It seemed that her long record of victories would surely be broken. In tho second set the American champion rallied and won, 6 —2, although Miss Nuthall was still playing an exceptional game. In the final set Mrs Wills-Moody, finding force inadequate, changed her tactics and employed a tricky drop shot. Miss Nuthall was obviously tirino- and somewhat nervous, several times double-faulting. When tho set score was o—l against her she thrice stopped Airs Wills-Moody at match point, finally winning the game, but losing tho next. Misses Nuthall and James advanced to the doubles finals, defeating Misses Jacobs and Pelfry, o—4,0 —4, 4.—0, 7 5.
