From Our Own Correspondent, There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Shannon Howling Club on Thursday evening. The President (Mr. A. U. Mason) occupied the chair and in the annual report said' “Firstly I have to thank, toe Secretary for his untiring energy and for too worn ho has done on behalf of the Bowling Club. A more energetic player anu oilioer could not be found in toe Club and j. compliment him on his work, i wish also to thank toe members of all the committee who have all done their various duties well and truly. Eleven members of the LeVin Golf Club visited Shannon last week to p ay members of the latter club an a f "® nd, | match. The day was peifect and uie links in splendid order. The Msltors were entertained by the Shannon golf ladies.at afternoon tea, and after the Match Mr W. XI bogey match was won by H. Blyth, who finished • all sauare on. the Colonel, in the.final .of, the consolation handicap between H. Mead and S. Graham, the latter secured a win. p The senior championship final over holes was played between H. Blyth and C. Stern and resulted in an interesting and close game. At the end of the firm round Blyth was one up and t.iis ieaa he maintained until hear toe end when he ihcreased it finally to 3 and 1. Stern made a great effort to oven the match and at times whs playing wonderfully fine golf. Blyth has now won the championship twice in succession and by all appearances his golf just now is of a very high standard. Hard-up Social. On Wednesday evening a hard-up social was held at Mangaone and was an outstanding success. Almost everyone of the -10 present was in nard-up dress and for the most original idea Mrs. Campbell proved toe winner among the ladies and Mr. McLean for the men. The spot dance was won by Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Morgan, while Mr. and Ho©’ gat'd won toe prize for the Monte Carlo. A feature of the evening was the supper, which consisted of baked potatoes in their skins and hot savaloys. All tootoughly enjoyed the evening and it was decided that in view of the school h® ll ' days the card party for the school funds would now be held on September 5. Mr. Flicol and Mr. Ostler acted as M. so. Bon Voyage. Some 40 friends of Tom McMeeking gathered at Laurvlg’s hall last week to bid him farewell as he leaves for Suva nest week to join his father. Tne fatowell social was a tribute to his popularity . Games and danclhg were joined in with enthusiasm. Miss Joan Bovis wished Tom every happiness in his new home and work, and presented him with a fountain pen on behalf of his girl friends in Shannon. Mr. Toby Itossltcr, on behalf of toe boys, presented him with a cigarette case and an attache case. The guest suitably replied .thanking the donors of toe valuable gifts and expressing sorrow at the prdspects of leaving Shannon and so many kind friends. Supper was supplied by the ladies and dances continued until the small hours. The SShdhnon Plunket Society hold a card party last week wheli the opportunity was taken in a practical way to express appreciation to Mrs. Tayler by the ladies present, and to publicly thank her for the good work she had done for the society in Shannon. Mrs. Taylor’s home was recently destroyed by fire and each lady brought a useful present for too new home. These were presented by the president (Mrs. C. Easton), Mrs. Taylei suitably replied, stating how grateful she felt for the many kindnesses shown her by friends in Shannon. The afternoon was then spent at a card partj, the tournament being won by Mrs. Satherley, with Mrs. Hyde second. Afternoon tea was supplied by the ladles. A most enjoyable social evening was held in the Methodist social room on Monday of last week when a variety of entertainment whs presented. New and novel games provided a great deal of fun and laughter and all present pronounced the evening one of the most successful yet held. Miss . Quarrie Was the Vinner of toe fishing pond trick and the Misses S. and G. Ihgley were successful with the road signs. The jlbfelty gobelty competltion was won by the Rev. O. P. Lid del, •who manoeuvred his cllop stlcl?3 with credit. • , It is only a few years since the school at OniJci was opened and since then the Makerua plains have developed on the Shannon, side. The pi’obleni of educating, the children on the southern end is causing the' parents some concern, ana the Education Board has been petitioned to have a school erected for the purpose. Failing that,'it is hoped that arrangements can be made for a bus to transport the children to the Shannon school. At present there are 25 of school age and the difficulty “of getting I to the nearest school is a serious problem. A number of new farms have been taken up rectsnc-

There passed away suddenly at Shannon one of the old identities in the person of Mr. Charles .Stevens - .who had been in Indifferent health for some time. His health, however, had not been such a 3 to cause his friends any. anxiety and his sudden demise came “as ,a shock. HauSman, of Kingston road, when her clothing . caught alight. The district nurse was summoned and rendered all possible aid, after which the suffferer/was sent to hospital for treatment. It was being found that her visits were so extensive that she could not cope with them satisfactorily on a bicycle.
