MRS MARY CARTHEW The death at Wellington on Sunday of Mrs Mary Carthow, widow of the late Mr William Carthew, witnesses j the passing of another of Beil ding’s pioneer settlers, for the deceased lady, | with her late husband, came to the town five years after its foundations were laid. Numbered among that band of enterprising settlers who saw through the bush which covered the ' site of the town, a vision of the future, ,'rhe late Mrs Carthew nobly shared in | the trials of those diflicult days, to ' cheerfully master adversity and live on I to her Sltli year to witness progress never dreamed of . A daughter of the late Mr Wm. Brent, 3ha was born at Prince Edward’s Island, in New-j foundland. She came to New Zealand with her parents, five sisters and two brothers, together with two other) families, in their own vessel, the Lady . Jane Grey, and landed at Nelson in 1555. Married at Nelson, Mr and Mrs Carthew lived for some time at the Thames and finally came toFeilding in May, 187-0. Mrs Carthew was a keen and loyal Methodist. Her hiis- : band died exactly three years ago. j They are survived by four daughters {--Mrs Joseph Darragh, of Eeilding; j Mrs Me Vicar, of Eeilding; Mrs Eid- ! dell, of Lyall Bay; Mrs Rowe, of ' I Christchurch —and one son, Mt W. E. Carthew, of Eeilding, to whom much sympathy will be extended in their beI reavernent. A fifth daughter, Mrs E. Hicks, predeceased her mother about 10 years ago. The funeral will take place inFeild- | ing this afternoon.
