Feilding Rugby

WIN FOR LOCAL TEAM By the narrow margin of one point Feilding snatched victory from Old Boys at Johnston park on Saturday. The game was . a ragged one, neither side displaying first-class football. Old Boys (black): Tillick, Bradley, Heise, Fuklowski, Wehipcihana, Lang, Gibson, Jordan, Cutler, Waldegravc, Stewart, Warren, Howell, O’Dea, Yortt. Feilding (yellow): Wimata, Durie, Dixon, Linton, Kitchen, McCo nun dale, Dcwe, Jaggard, Hight, Edhouso, Adsett, Penney, Pratt, Farmer, Thornley. Old Boys had the disadvantage of the sun in the first spell which opened up with ragged play. Bradley openeu up the visitors’ aceouut with a nice try . that terminated a forward attack, and Waldegravc added the extra points. —Old Boys 5, Yellows 0. Feilding held the territorial advantage following the kick off and Dixon, who intercepted a black counter attack, had hard luck in knocking on. But for that he would have bad a clear run. Lang took a mark just over the half w r ay and attempted to goal but a good kick missed by a foot or two only. Yellows wont back again and prospects looked bright when Durie found the lino a yard from the corner post. A free kick to blacks reduced the pressure. The yellow backs saw a good deal of the ball at this stago and handled well but wero unable to penetrate the defence. A free kick in a handy position gave Adsett a chance of setting up first figures for Feilding but the kick went wide. Then McCorkindalc intercepted a black rush and gained a lot of ground before being grassed. Old Boys were caught obstructing and McCorkindale ■ took the kick right up against the posts but the leather went wide. Then Dixon was given a similar chance further out but did not put enough boot behind it. There followed almost immediately a third opportunity, blacks being penalised right under the posts this time and Dixon raised the flags.—Old Boys 5, Feilding 3. Dixon raised cheers when he made a brilliant solo dash down tho left wing, eluding two opponents. The pass went out and a scoring chance was lost. A free kick early in the second spell brought up a determined yellow forward attack but a few seconds later Feilding were lucky in winning the Tace for tho ball over their own line. Bradley was mainly responsible for getting it there, making a splendid run down his wing. Feilding went back and Old Boys relieved by forcing. Blacks got going again, a back line movement ending at tho 25 flag when a pas 3 was missed. Yellow forwards tdogged back for Durie to pick up. A wild pass, however, ended the effort. Flay was ragged for a while, the only bright spot being an effort by Lang who fought his way single-handed through the yellow pack. He had a certain try in his hands but chose to pass to Waldograve who was well marked. Feilding then showed Old Boys how it should be done, Dixon finishing up a well conceived movement ■with a thrilling race which ho won at tho corner. Hight made a bad attempt at goaling.—Feilding 6, Old Boys 5. Old Boys retaliated within five minutes, Wehipeihana setting his backs in motion io take up the Tunning again at the end of the lino and finally passing to Bradley who touched down in a handy position. Lang could not add the extra points.—Old Boys 8, Feilding 6. Dixon again showed his speed and working around a 3crum, put yellows within 10 yards of their goal. Tho forwards packed round and heeling out, enabled Dewe to pass to McCorkindalo who shot over. Dixon disappointed with an easy shot.—Feilding 9, Old Boys S. Blacks had five minutes in which to retrieve the lead but failed. As a matter of fact, they wero being bustled on their own line as time was called. Mr. Still controlled ‘ tho game.
