Firm Against Lifting Embarge
FEILDING A. AND p. association Following the reading of a letter from the Romney Marsh Sheep Breeders’ Association containing extracts from a letter received from the Minister of Agriculture covering the _ results of European into the question of the retention of foot and mouth disease infection by cattle presumably cured, at Friday’s meeting of tho Feilding A. and P. Association, Mr H. J- Lancaster said that the association should do more than merely receive the communication. Ho was still of a firm opinion regarding the retention of the embargo on stock imports from Britain, and ho was sorry that he had not been at. the meeting of tho Manawatu A. and P. Association when a motion favouring tho lifting of the embargo was carried. Mr Lancaster said he also was one of * ‘diehards” who had opposed tho lifting of tho embargo. He referred to a recent comparison mado by his Excellency Lord Bledisloo regarding English and New Zealand beef cattle. Mr Lancaster Tefuted tho remarks that Lord Bledisloo had mado at tho time, and was emphatic that every endeavour should be mado to keep New Zealand stock in its present safe state against risk of the disease. Ho moved as an amendment that the letter be sent on to the Farmers’ Union for consideration. Thiswas seconded by Mr H. B. Johnston, who urged that the embargo be retained. The meeting voted on the issue and; carried the amendment on a show of hands.
