‘ROBBERS’ ROOST’’
Aii unusual air of Tealism, lino performances by a notable cast, and a story that builds from one peak of excitement to another, all feature “(Robbers’ Roost,” the Fox Films offering at tho Tivoli Theatre. Here is a picture that offers real entertainment along -with its gorgeous scenic backgrounds and swift action. Zane Grey is said to have drawn on actual events in the colourful history of cat-tle-raising in the South-west for the basis of his story. It is an intriguing tale- of a wealthy and unsuspecting British rancher, a rascally foreman, a fugitive who joins tho foreman’s gang of' rustlers, and the rancher’s lovely young sister. With this quartette, the audience was treated to plenty ot thrills. One of the most gripping gun-battles ever filmed, forms the climax of the picture, with the rustlers trapped by a posse in the Dandits’ retreat, from which tho production gets its name. George O’Brien, as the fugitive who reforms under romance, gives one of the best portrayals of his career, and Maureen O’Sullivan is charming as tho imperious heroine. Besides these two favourites, the supporting cast is of a calibre seldom seen in outdoor iilms. Maude Eburne, who scored as Janet Gaynor’s mother in the recent “The First Year,’’ again gives a fine performance as Maureen’s placid aunt. The noted English actor, Reginald Owen, is thoroughly convincing as tho tenderfoot rancher. William Pawley, Walter McGrail, Robert Grcig and Doris Lloyd all do excellently in prominent roles. Louis King’s direction is uniformly effective, and with the majority of the scenes taken at the exact locale of the story, ‘‘Robbers’ Roost’’ can take its place among the outstanding films of the West. There is a Mickey Mouse, “Grocery Boy,” among the supports. A matinee will be field tfiis afternoon at 2.30.
