MANAWATU BOWLING-, CROQUET AND TENNIS CLUB In. his roport to be presented at the annual meeting of the Manawatu Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club, the president (Mr. J. B. Gcrrand) states: “The season proved a very enjoyable one. Financially, the club has had another strenuous year, and finished on the working with a loss of £4 5s 4d. Had the membership been maintained a very much better position would have resulted. To those who have in any way given voluntary service, the thanks of the club are due. The lease having expired on July 1, 1933, new tentative arrangements have been entered into with the City Council, which, provided the members give their ablest co-opera-tion during the coming season, should prove beneficial to the club. The council is certainly due the thanks of the club for the sympathetic consideration given in the matter of the new agreement. To the various committees ana executive officers of the different sections, I extend my thanks for the wonderful assistance given in the season under review. With happier and more prosperous conditions appearing on the horizon, we should look forward to a more successful season in every way than experienced in recent times.” Section Reports. The secretary of the bowling section (Mr. W. Bates) reports:—“The Bowling Club membership was well maintained. The weather conditions were exceptionally good, giving us good sport. The club singles were won by Mr. J. Kershaw; the club pairs by Messrs Barnes and Hunter, and the club’s rinks by Messrs J. Kershaw (skip), Corbridge, Kennedy and Ghana. Tne handicap singles contest was won by Mr. J. B. Gerrand, the runner-up being Mr. K. McDonald (prize donated by Mr. Corbridge); “Cock of tne Walk,” Mr. J. G. Radford; Corbridge Fern 3, Messrs Carlisle and Robertson. The club won the following trophies: Dixon Cup, Ainslio Shield, Veterans’ Vase, Takaro Cup, Harris Stars; the two latter trophies being still in the hands of our club. We were well represented in the Easter tournament, having 11 vo rinks entered.” Tennis Section. The secretary of the tennis soction (Mr. R. E. Elliot) reported:—“The Saturday team did not fare so well as previous years in the competitions, but tho Wednesday team were only one point behind tho winners at the conclusion of the games. Both the ladies’ championship singles and handicap singles were won by Miss Worrall, while in tho men’s competitions Mr. Puklowski won both. As Miss Worrall and Mr. Puklowski have now won their respective handicap singles twice, these trophies become their permanent possessions. It is pleasing to note that two of our junior members, W. Smillie and 11. Wright, entered the finals of the High School championships and we extend our congratulations to both these players. It was very gratifying to see tho way in which the older players mixed with and played against those players who were just beginning the game, and this fact augurs well for the new season.” Croquet. The secretary of the croquet section (Mrs. A. M, Sears) reported:—“The North Island and Manawatu tournaments were held on our greens and were enjoyed by many. Mrs. Sears was successful in winning the B grade handicap singles in the North Island tournament. In the Manawatu tournament, Mrs. Radford won the A grade handicap singles. Mesdames Robertson and Radford held the Corbridge stars and Pollock stars, but had to forfeit them after withstanding several challenges. We trust that the coming season will be as enjoyable as the last. Our thanks are tendered in the committee and all who have so generously helped when called upon for assistance.”
