HENRY HILL—A NOTABLE FIGURE. Per Press Association. NAPIER, July 15. The death has occurred of Mr Henry Hill, 8.A., F.G.S., late Inspector of Schools for Hawke’s Bay; aged 84. Ike late Mr Henry Hill, who was one of the best known figures in Hawko’s Bay, was born at Lye Stourbridge, Worcestershire, being the son of Mr B. Hill, iron and nail factor. He was educated at Lye and Cheltenham, and came to Now Zealand in 1873 under special engagement to the Canterbury Provincial Government. He started a school at Avonsidc, and later opened tho East Christchurch school. He was the first winner of tho Bowen Prize, in 1878. After being inspector of Hawke’s Bay schools for many years, ho retired in 1914. The late Mr Hill served on various local and educational bodies; lie served one term as Mayor, and was also a- Parliamentary candidate. His pen was rarely idle; he wroto largely on education, geology, Maori folklore and traditions, and was a voluminous contributor to tho Transactions of the New Zealand Institute. JUDGE RAWSON. The death haa occurred of Judge W. E. Rawson, of tho Nativo Land Court. He was appointed to tho position in 1906, and previously had much experience as a solicitor in the North Island.
