HAWKE’S BAY RELIEF WORKERS OUT
General Strike Declared STRONG OBJECTION TO TYPE OF AVORK. Per Press Association HASTINGS, Last Night. A general striko of unemployed on all relief jobs has been declared throughout the Hawke’s Bay district duo to objections which have been raised to employing relief workers on the River Board’s diversion of tho Tutaekuri river scheme and other works which the Hawke’s Bay County Council has in hand. In addition a meeting held in Napier this evening decided unanimously that instead of adopting passive resistance they would employ every means there were to see that there were no blacklegs employed. They maintain that the river diversi oa work should bo carried out under conditions of full time and at standard rate of wages and the County Council work is maiutcnanco which should be done by tho Council’s permanent staff and which would lead to men being compulsorily sent out to various camps.
Tho relief workers have made an appeal to business men throughout tlie district which concludes with tho following: “We are confident that you will not allow our wives and children to go hungry whilst we arc fighting tor better conditions.”
Speakers at one of the several meetings held throughout the day said so far as national action is concerned ho did not know what advice the local organisation would give to the national council. It would be foolish to “stago an explosion” at presont, but there was no doubt when serious action was taken the public would be sympathetic not only in the Bay but throughout New Zealand.
