Tho Australian Press Association’s special representative at Lord’s says without tlic “black demon,” Constantine, whom tho Nelson Club refused to release from his professional engagements, the West Indies had tho misfortune to loso the toss. Walters, tho Worcestershire captain, playing his first test partnered Sutcliffe on an easy wicket. The fast bowlers, Martindale and Francis (the latter borrowed from the Lancashire League) kept the batsmen quiet for the first half-hour, but after rain had caused 20 minutes’ adjournment the slippery ball rendered tbo bowling ineffcctivo and scoring was considerably easier. Walters played neatly and confidently, timing the ball well.
Rain again commenced at 12.30 causing a long delay. The King arrived during the rain and conversed with tho players. The rain continued during tho afternoon and play was abandoned at 4.30. Tho bowling thus far lias been orthodox with packed slips. The - ball Tarelv rose high. Fifteen thousand attended and the minimum charge for admission was two shillings which was a costly morning’s cricket.
