MANAWATU-OROUA BRANCH The Manawatu-Oroua branch of the New Zealand Pig Breeders’ Association met on Saturday. There were present Messrs IT. Thurston (chairman), C. P. MeMcckan (secretary), E. I'. Nielsen, D. Buchanan, A. Cr. Dear, H. E. Ficldhousc, M. Knudsen, D. P. Bickers, H. Hazlehurst, Cr. M. Whitelock, C. S. Hunt, R. Dalzicll, W. J. Croucher and W. C'. Scott. A representative of the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., offered a number of suggestions for the next sale of stud pigs which, he said, would tend to keep the sale at a high standard. His firm thought that the numbers of pigs to he offered should be limited. He also suggested that a truck load of the very best pigs should be sent to Hamilton where buyers from that district and North Auckland would bo operating. In sending only tho very best pigs they would bring tho Waikato breeders to a realisation of the high standard in the Manawatu. Mr. Croucher suggested that a committee should be set up to go into the suggestion with the auctioneers. The suggestion was moved by Mr. Fieldhouse and seconded by Mr. Nielsen and carried. Those elected to the committee were Messrs Nielsen, Bickers, Pieldhouse, Whitcla-w and Kcilcr. Messrs Thurston and Nielsen were appointed the official representatives on the Pig Recording Club. Certain alterations to Show classes arc to bo suggested to the A. and P. Association, prize money being deducted from the utility class and added to a younger class. The matter was left in the hands of the A. and P. Association to bo finally adjusted. It was advised by Mr. P. G. Stevens, agriculture master at the Fcilding High School, that in the boys’ bacon judging competition at the Winter Show 55 score cards were handed in and of those somo 20 approximated to the judges’ placings. The prize money is to be divided between Sommerville (Raetihi), Fountaino (Woodville), Aiken (Wavcrley) and Curtis (Feilding). Thanks for tho splendid assistance given by Air. 11. E. Thurston and other members of the association in tho bacon section at the Winter Show were expressed in a letter from the secretary of the A. and P. Association. The classes, apart from their educational value, had become a star attraction at tho Show. Its effectiveness would be greatly diminished were it not for tho assistance rendered by tho Breeders’ Association. Mr. D. Buchanan expressed his thanks to the association members. It was decided to,accept Messrs Barraud and Abraham’s tender for the, supply of pig meal foi the next season.
