Preparing for the National Flower Show

MEETING OF COMMITTEE A meeting of tho National Flower Show Committee was held last evening, Mr. P. Black presiding. Also present were Messrs J. A. Galland, L. J. Plank (representing the liorticuituralists), L. J. Morino and F. Honoro (garden circle), W. V. Kingsbecr and A. Just (nurserymen), J. J. Stevenson and F. J. Nathan (Horticultural Institute). Tho meeting discussed matters relative to the forthcoming national flower show which is to be staged in Palmerston North early next year. Tho secretary (Mr. Stevenson) reported that ho had obtained guarantors for the show to the extent of £l5O consisting of 30 backers of £5 each. Mr. Stevenson also stated that committees interested had been circularised as to the progress of the national flower show committee up to the present time. The committee was receiving wonderful support in the way of donations from the nurserymen of tho district, with great interest displayed in the amateur section. In addition, tho Women’s Institute organisation was ready to accord full assistance and co-opeiu-tiou in the home industries and housecraft divisions. The institutes considered that their entries would at least mi ono exhibition hall. The winner of last month’s competition for the crystal vase for the best bloom submitted to the meeting was Mr. C. J. Erenstrom, with Mr. 11. Wilson second and Mr. A. Melhuisli third.

Following tho meeting-of the committee, Mr. A. Just delivered an interesting vocational talk to the flower circle and the Horticultural Institute. He dealt extensively with ornamental and flowering shrubs. Tho best varieties for culture in Palmerston North were described as well as the times of flowering. Mr. Just also gave some helpful points on tho collection of autumn-foliage trees and also the furnishing of berry shrubs for the winter. At the conclusion of his address Mr. Just answered several questions on the subject. Ho was accorded a lieaTty vote of thanks for his address.
