Heavy Going for Horse Jumping at the Show
PERFORMANCES AFFECTED THEREBY
Horse competitions were tlic oval attraction at tho Winter Show yesterday. Unfortunately tho ground was in a heavy condition, making tho going very difficult and decreasing tho number of competitors. One spill occurred, a mount in the ladies’ jumping competition crashing through a hurdle and throwing its rider, who received an injury to her shoulder. Results of the four events were ns follow: — Maiden Jumpers' Competition, open to horses that had not won a competition at any agricultural show: Mrs A. W. McDonald’s (Palmerston North) Hinatorc 1, Miss D. Perry’s (Wai■tuna) Caro 2, I/. H. Collinson’s (Palmerston North) Petrarch 3. Open Hunters’ Competition: Mrs A. W. McDonald’s (Palmerston North) Hinatorc 1, Mrs E. I. McKay’s (Dannevirkc) Gisborne Jack 2, W. G. Bason’s (Makirikiri) Gay Boy 3. Pony Leaping Competition, for ponies 14.2 hands and under, to be ridden by boys and girls: Miss Doris Young’3 (Kairanga) Larrikin 1, H. M. Blunden’s (Kakariki) Parakino 2, Jock Easton’s (Poxton) entry 3. Ladies’ Jumping Competition; Mrs E. I. McKay's (Dannevirkc) Gisborne Jack 1, Mrs A. W. McDonald’s (Amipuni) Hinatorc 2, W. G. Bason’s (Makirikiri) Gay Boy 3. Commenting on the jumping, the judge, Mr W. McL’Dowie, of Haw era, expressed disappointment that the going had been so difficult. As a result, most of the jumping had been poor, much below the usual standard. He had not been able to give any horse full marks. In the ladies’ jumping, out of 11 entries only six had started and two of these had not completed the round. However, tho three placed horses, which had also filled the places in the open hunters’ competition, had jumped very nicely.
