Intense Competition Between Japan and Britain
COMMERCIAL BODIES EXCHANGE NOTES United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Juno 15. The Japanese Economic Federation has telegraphed tho British Federation of Industrios, the Associated Brittsh Chambers of Commerce, and the Manchester Chamber of Commerco that thev aro anxious to conclude adequate trade agreements with Britain with, a view to adjusting tho intonso competition. They regret tho recent attitude of the British cotton industry as antagonistic to the traditional Anglo-Jap-ancse friendship.
Japanese cotton interosts, they say, aro so perturbed at the revision of the Indian import tariff that they are prepared to boycott Indian Taw cotton. Japan may impose a prohibitive tariff on wool, wheat and other products imported from Britain and the Dominions. The recipients of the telegram replied that such a tariff would have disastrous results. They earnestly hope ithat an exchange of views may result in harmony. The present situation is grave and intolerable to British industrial and commercial interests, who in no way aro associated with the independent Indian action.
