Sharp Advance in -Potatoes

PROBABLE SHIPMENT TO SOUTH AMERICA. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. A sharp improvement in the potato market has set in since mid-week. Though Auckland has been inquiring a little it has not been to an extern to influence the market and the main factor in the firming doubtless is that crops are yielding very moderately in somo districts. The dry autumn has affected later crops to an appreciable extent.

Another factor is the probability of a further shipment of 1000 tons to South America. The shipment lias not been definitely arranged for, but tho probability of it during the month has had a hardening effect on the price for prompt potatoes. The wet weather has temporarily delayed the digging and farmers arc not offering many, although by this time digging should be well advanced. The Wingatui sailed during the week with a moderate consignment for tho month. Stocks arc now getting down in Auckland and merchants anticipate that tho belated demand will not be much longer delayed. Whites for prompt shipment arc quoted at £4 5s f.0.b., s.i., or £3 5s on trucks j Julys at £5 to £5 ss, f.0.b., s.i. Dakotas advanced sharply during the last few days. Generally this variety owes its premium to a later demand from Wellington, but this season Auckland is developing a taste for the variety. Prices to growers have advanced to £4 2s Gd to £4 5s per ton, or £5 10s, f.0.b., s.i. Onions are worth £3 5s per ton on trucks, but not much is doing in this product. Fowl wheat remains unaltered at 3s 6d per bushel, f.0.b., s.c. Oats show littlo chango A Gartons arc worth 2s to 2s Id on trucks. The small seeds market is uncharged.
