From Our Own Correspondent. Municipal Affairs. The monthly meeting of tho Foxtou Borough Council was licld on Monuay evening. Present , tho Mayor (Mr. Al. E. Perreau), Crs. Cowley, Harvoy, Barron, John Ross, R. J. Thompson, J. L. Christie and the town clerk (Air. w. Trueman). Apologies wore received from Crs. Crowe, Robinson and Rangilicuea. In his detailed’financial report, the treasurer (Air. W. Trueman) reported that dliving February tho sum of £905 18s had been received and banked. Tho state of the various ledger accounts wero shown as follow: —In credit: Rato arrears £lO2l 3s 3d, coinetery £BO 5s (id, heavy traffic £7B (is lid, library £ll ISs 2d, reserves £lOl 5s Sd, unemployment relief 15s 3d, Town Hall pictures £2S9 8s Bd, temporary deposits £OOO, waterworks £l7l 10s Id; total £2410 19s Od. In debit:. Gasworks £.1353 7s Sd, general £2353 Is 9d, Hospital Board £129 9s Id, interest. £.109.1 0s Id, Town Hall £577 Is Id, workers' dwelling £42 7s, Foxtou Harbour Board £47 19s 9U; total £5594 18s lid. The amount of the bank overdraft at tho end of February was £3183 19s sd.

Tho road foreman (Air. A. G. Huntley) reported on tho various maintenanco works carried out during the month both in regard to streets and footpaths. Tho' gasworks manager (Mr. C. MacLean) stated that during February w tons 9cwt. of coal had been carbonised, the total yield of gas being 294,800 cubic feet. Ten scrvico connections had been cleaned and the works in general woro functioning satisfactory. Tho watonvorks foreman (Mr. W. D. Neville) stated that two blocked sewers and three leaking water mains had been attended to. During the month 2,755,000 gallons of water had been pumped into tho mains. Ho further reported that about two-thirds of the work of removing tho sandhill at tho site of tho proposed woolpack factory had been completed. Tho poundkeeper reported that during tho month two head of stock wero impounded and driving fees amounting to 2s were collcctcu. connection with the latter rp.port several councillors drew attention to the prevalence of wandering stock on tho borough streets and urged that a more rigid control of tho nuisance be enforced. It was decided to draw the ranger’s attention to the matter. AVhirokino Cut. A letter was read from tho Mana-watu-Uroua River Board asking tho council to receive a deputation from the board at their next meeting. Tho lower intimated that tho matter to bo discussed wa3 that of tho proposed Whirokino cut. It was decided to advise tho River Board that tho council would receivo the deputation at its April meeting. “Smith Family” Scheme. A letter was read from the Smith Family organisation, of AVellingrou, stating that it had been decided to call a conference of all relief organisations of the Dominion for the purpose of considering, and if possible, revising tho existing methods of dispensing roJiof to those in distress throughout tho whole of New Zealand. In discussing the matter the Alayor said that no doubt furtlior difficulties would have to bo faced during tho coining winter. There was, as yet, no sign of improvement in the economic situation and tho question of unemployment was probably tho biggest matter before public men to-day.

Cr. Cowley: “Will tho conference assist tho local unemployed*” Tho Mayor: “The idea is for a national schemo, which if successfully launched will bo of benefit to all unemployed.” Cr. Barron said that the Dorcas [Society seemed to be tho only organisation which was dispensing relief locally at the present time. He suggested tnat they should bo consulted in the matter. Tho Alayor said he believed that was so. The Citizens’ Committee previously formed was disbanded at tho special request of tho local unemployed. “1 don’t know whether the local relief workers now have an active relief organisation or not,” ho added. Cr. Barron then moved that the Mayor and a member of the Dorcas Society be appointed to represent Foxton at the conference. In speaking to the motion ho took the opportunity of paying a glowing tribute to tho good work which was being so quietly carried out by tho Dorcas [Society. Tho Mayor: “I certainly feel that we should do something in the matter.” Ho also eulogised the good work of the Dorcas Society. Councillor Cowley seconded the motion which was carried unanimously.
