Women's Institutes

FAPATAWA The annual meeting of the Bnpntawa WX -was held on March 11th in the Community Hall. 'Mrs Munro presided over a very fair attendance. The president presented a comprehensive report of the yoar’s work and treasurer posted up a copy of the balance sheet which showed a very creditable balance to be handed over to the new committee. There were two resignations from offico Tecoived r and the vacancies wero filled by other mombers. There being only ono nomination for the position of president, Mrs Martin was duly declared president for the ensuing year and, was greeted with acclamation. The following committee was formed:—Mrs W. Cunningham and Mrs Munro (vice-presidents), Mcsdamcs Hall, McLean, Glcadow, Chapman, Baker, Dickies (secretary and treasurer), Misses E. and D. Hutchinson, Thomp-son-and Martin. During the afternoon Miss Vida Nelson delighted thee members with hor singing of two songs. “Danny Boy" and “Achal by the Sea.” A Toll call, “Suggestions for the new programme” brought forth many valuablo suggestions and tho committee should not have much trouble in preparing the new programme. Tho competition for tho afternoon was for tho best block home made sweets and Mrs Munro wa's the winner. This competition was the last of a series of competitions conducted during tho year, and Mrs Munro, having t-lic most points to her credit, becomes the proud possessor of our valuable shield for tho ensuing year and was the recipient of hearty congratulations. Tho hostesses for the afternoon were the members of the out-going committee and theso ladies being in a cheery mood entered the room" attired in fancy paper hats, aprons. etc., and singing the well-known community song, “Pack up your Troubles.” They served a very dainty afternoon tea which everyone enjoyed. After the business part of tho meeting was concluded, handsome bouquets were presented to the retiring president (Mrs Munro), vice presidents, (Mrs AV. Cunninghame and Mrs Gilliland). secretary, (Miss Boss), treasurer, (Mrs HaTding), and to Mrs Coward, the oldest member in the Institute. A collection of dainty articles made of wood and ornamented with pokerwork was on view. Theso were made by members of the AV.I. at the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England. Tho meeting closed with the singing of the National Antliera. , SANSON The committee of the Sanson AV.I. met on Friday evening when Airs A. K. Drew presided. Those present were Mcsdamcs F. Grace, H. J. Fagan, A. K. Drew, F. Bowater, F. Fostevin, A. Adams, J. Meyer, P. Co'ssum, and 'Misses M. McFarlane, L. Gcdye and A. E. Fagan. A programme was drawn up for April, May and June meetings, the main attractions for the April meeting being demonstrations of making bags from old motor tubes and the' making of bullion roses for decorative stitchery. Also there will bo a competition for the be3t four pikelets. It wa's decided to hold an open night on Friday night, March SI. An attractive programme was arranged, consisting of items, - vocal, instrumental and elocutionary, community singing under the capable leadership of Air J. Currie and a talk on drama by Aliss Tcale, of Palmerston North. Those who have been fortunate enougth to hear Miss Teale before are keen to have that privilege again. Supper will be provided by Institute members. horoeka. A meeting of the Horocka Women’s Institute was held in tho schoolroom on Wednesday last, Alr3. AV. Lunt presiding over a good attendance of members and visitors. The meeting opened with the Institute Song. Some time was spent discussing business and it was decided to hold a dance to raise funds for tho institute, tho date to dg arranged shortly. A. pianoforte solo by Aliss AVhitta was much - enjoyed. The Toll call “Sing, say or threepence pay was most amusing. The competition for the afternoon was for the most useful article .made from a flour bag, Mrs. Frame being the winner with Airs. Toxward second. A gored skirt cut from measurements was demonstrated by Airs. T. AVhitta., The hostesses were Mrs. Wallis, Miss Thomas and Aliss N AVhitta. Afternoon tea and the Na tjonal Anthem closed the afternoon. TE ARAKURA. At the second annual meeting of the Te Arakura Women’s Institute held last week at the residence of Airs. Danielson, Cameron’s line, Kauwliata, Alis. AV. E. Thomas presided over a large attendance. The meeting opened with the singing of the “Ode to Friendship” which was followed by the reading of the AVomon’s Institute Creed by the president. The Balance-sheet, showed a fair credit balance, which was most satisfactory. Airs. Thomas, after a short speech, heartily thanked all the institute members, also the loyal committee, for their help and co-operation during the past year, and' wished tho institute every success in the coming term. Airs. Glassford commented on the work done, and also paid a tribute to the efforts of the president, the secretary, the treasurer and the committee.

Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow:—President, Mrs. Griffith; committee, Mesdames Thomas, Baxter,. Bradley, Whisker (all re-elect-ed), Mesdames Bussell and J. J. Hume, Misses Bailey and Hansen (re-elected) and E. Bennett. Mrs. Danielson and M'iss Benge were elected delegates to attend the annual council meeting in Fcilding.

The competition for the day, the best thrift article, was kindly judged by Misses Bailey and Parker. The senior class was won by Mrs. Bradley with Mrs. Griffith second and Mrs. Wilkins fh’ird' and tho junior class was won by Mish Hansen, Miss Benge second and Miss Whisker third. A very successful gift stall was held in aid of tho institute funds, Mrs. Johnston and Miss Benge being in charge. A hearty vote of. thanks was extended both ladies,

also the scrutineers, Mesdames Wood,

O’Regan and Miss Elliott. A vote of thanks also was extended to the auditor, Air. D. Johnston. A dainty afternoon lea was handed round, tho hostesses being Airs. Danielson and Alisscs Dunn and Jones. It was decided to hold an institute picnic on Alarch 25, at Air. Campbell’s bush. Tho next meeting is to be held at Airs. Russell’s residence, Robert's line, when the competition will bo for a lady’s worked calico apron. MAKINO. The annual meeting of the Alakino AV.I’. was held in tho school on Tuesday evening, Airs. Alason presiding over a fair attendance. “Tho Ode” was sung and tho AV.I. Crocd read. The annual report and financial statement were received, both showing satisfactory results. Tho retiring jircsidont made a few remarks on tho report and the aim 3 and ideals, of ,tho movement, and also thanked all members for working so well to make the. meetings a success.. Mrs. E. E.- Short,- voluntary organiser, gave a short address on federation work, explaining all points of interest to members. As the nominations for tho committee did not exceed the number required, the following wore declared elected: —Alesdamcs AV. Baker, A. Bcazcr, D. Fraser, A. Laing, S. Alaylxew, J. Alason, d Nairn, P. Simpson, K. Thurston, and AVilton, also "the Misses J 3. and Af. Oldfield and F. Pearson. Alr3. Alason was roturned to the office of president unopposed, with Airs. AV. .Baker and P. Simpson, as viec-prcsi-dents. At the conclusion of business the time was spent in musical items and amusing competitions. Airs. A. L. Dormer ancl Miss L. Baker contributed songs which were much appreciated. An amusing dialogue was given by Aliss B. Bcazcr and Aliss AI. Hjlls. A guessing competition, the answers being names of car 3 was won by Airs, A. E. Pearson. Alr3. AV. Baker and Mrs. Vincent tied in the musical competition, Airs. Vincent winning ovcntually. Several junior members gave some charades in tho form of proverbs. Airs. Mason moved a hearty voto : of thanks to all tho performers who so willingly gave of their talents. Two new members were welcomed. Thanks to tho hostesses, Alesdamcs Alalono , Alason, Mayhew, Alitchell and willing helpers, were conveyed by Mrs. D. Fraser. The competition for next month will be for three pieces of shortbread. Tho new committee will meet at 2 p.m. on Friday next at the usual place. Tho meeting closed with the National Anthem.
