Manawatu County

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL The Manawatu County Council met at Sanson yesterday, Cr. W, E. Barber (chairman) presiding. There were also present Crs. J. Boyce, D. W. Eeid, \V. E. Pearce, J. 11. Pcrrett, J. F. McIvclvie and N. Morcom. Correspondence The following correspondence was dealt with: — From the Sluggish Kivor Drainage Board requesting attention to erosion in tho Main drain at Rangiotu. Referred to the county engineer for investigation and report. From the Manawatu-Oroua River Board intimating tho arrangements made for the clearing away of obstructions and debris under the Rangiotu bridge. —Decided to refer the fetter back with a suggestion that it was a matter for the Kairanga County Council.

From the Foxton Chamber of Commerce forwarding copy of letter sent to Minister of Employment urging attention to proposals for raising Whirokino highway to obviate flood menace. —Noted. From the Foxton Chamber of Commerce requesting the council to cut back a sandhill on the Foxton-Sauson highway at Oroua Downs.—To be looked into.

From Mr. W. R. Kells, Palmerston North, protesting against tho car-park-ing restrictions at tho entrance to the Rongotca cemetery—lt was resolved to reply to the effect that the paiking restrictions had to do solely with tho area provided for the turning of cars. From the Tangimoana Domain Board representing tho position regarding public conveniences at tho river-side resort. —Referred to tho county clerk and engineer to attend to. Rate Position The rate collector reported on the rate position as follows: — General. —Struck, £13,196 11s: collected, £5949 ISs Id; outstanding, £6708 18s. Hospital.—Struck, £2409 19s Gd; collected, £1153 ISs 9d; outstanding, £1256 Os 9d.

Specials. —Struck, £1370 7s 2d; collected, £526 18s 2d; outstanding, £843 9s; total current rates outstanding, £SSOS 7s 9d.

Arrears. —Outstanding for three years at March 31, 1932, £2276 9s sd; collected to date, £1079 Is Id; outstanding, £1196 7s 6d. An effort has been made to collect arrears on Crown lands with the assistance of the Commissioner, but so far we have met with very little success.

The 10 per cent, penalty would operate from March 20, when it was expected that substantial payments would be forthcoming. Tramway Manager’s Report The tramway manager reported as follows: —The chief items of traffic for the month of February were: General merchandise, etc., 121 tons; minerals and manure, 431 tons; eggs. 79 crates; sheep, 43 trucks; pigs, 2 trucks; metal, 144 trucks; wool, 154 bales. The accounts show a credit balance of £S9 15s lOd for tho month’s working. —Received. Rate Roll Alteration The following alteration was made on the rate roll: E. N. Macaulay to Ellen Jones, part Sees. 334/5, Carnarvon. Treasurer’s Report The treasurer reported on the county funds as follows: —County fund account (dr.), £10,079 2s 9d; loan account (cr.), £1377 ISs 3d; Main Highways loan account (cr.), £/6 3s 9d; nett, debit balance, £8,625 0s 9d. The amounts available for expenditure in the several ridings woro set out ns follow: —Sandon £163 10s Id, Mt. Stewart £lls 3s 2d, Waitolii £l2/ 17s 7d, Rongotca £2lO 6s 2d, Carnarvon £lO 118 s 4d, Ivawa Kawa £l7l 19s Gd, Awahou £lO5 12s Id. Engineer’s Report The county engineer (Mr. H. V. Bond) reported as follows: — Main Highways.—The Whirokino road had been patched. The Manawatu river bridge approach had been attended to and the road graded. The shoulders on the Foxton-Himatangi road had been patched and some sand blows stopped. Surface, metal had been spread and patching undertaken on the Himatangi-Sanson road. The road planer had been over this road several times and the usual grading carried out. The surface of the Ron-gotea-Longburn highway had been patched and graded. Large metal had been raked off the surface of Stewart’s line. All other metal-surfaced highways had been graded and tho usual maintenance carried out. During the hot weather metal chips had been distributed over the bitumen surface of the Mt. Stewart-Awahuri highway. The bituminous surfacing of the Himatangi-'Rangiotu Toad had . been commenced. The first coat priming and the road mix were complete and the traffic was consolidating this course. The plant mix was being spread immediately. Ridings. —In the Sandon riding patching had been undertaken, and surface metal had been spread on Wilson’s and Ngaio roads. Water channels had also been cleaned out in cuttings on the former road. Portions of the Ohakea road were being banked and the road was being put into good shape. Grading had been continued throughout the riding. Several roads had been graded in the Mt. Stewart riding and banking work was progressing on the Ivawa Kawa Toad. Willows had been cut and surface metal spread on Tompkin’s line in the Rongotca riding. Some patching had been completed on Kaimatarau road. Tho usual grading had been continued throughout. Largo sandblows had been repaired on Kellow’s and Pyke’s roads in the Ivawa Kawa riding. A little surface metal had been spread on Taikorca Toad and several roads had been graded. The usual maintenance and grading had been carried out in Waitohi, Carnarvon and Awahou Tidings.—Received.
