WELLINGTON, Last Night,
It is expected that several appointments to the Legislative Council will bo made by the Government shortly. There is a possibility that between five and eight new members will bo appointed. Tho present membership of the Council is 22, the lowest for many years.
It has been the practico until the past year or so to maintain the strength at about forty, half that of the House- of Representatives. However. the opinion is growing in Parliamentary circles that there is no need for 40 members and the chances arc that the Government may decide to stabilise the membership at about thirty. Threo members arc due to Tctire shortly—Sir Francis Bell, Hon. C. J Carrington and Hon. J. A. Hanan. It is thought an important consideration will be the readjustment of the geographical distribution of scats in the Council. At present there are ten members from the North Island, but after the next three have retired there will be only eight.
