TE MAHANGA’S RECORD

LONG RUN OF SECONDS

(By “Abaydos.”)

The pacing gelding To Mahanga is establishing an unenviable record of second placings, and wliilo lie lias registered very smart times in his respective races, lias each time been unfortunate enough to strike a rival just a shade better than himself. Tho brother to Taipcro opened his place account at the Auckland February meeting, when lie was beaten by Edna Worthy in the Waiheko Handicap, in which lie ran 2.53 from a 3.4 mark.

Tho second day To Mahanga was shaded at the finish of the Howick Handicap by the greatly-improved May Chcnault, and on a holding track recorded 3.32 3-5 from a 3.42 line. At the Wellington meeting Sunny Ducrow beat Mr. Wilfred Johnston’s pacer, who improved to 3.25 4-5 from .3.-45 in the Autumn Novice race, and he ran unplaced in the Taita Handicap. Last Saturday To Mahanga recorded twoj seconds at tho Wairarapa mooting, being beaten in the Martinborougk Handicap by Iron Man and in tho Foatherston Handicap by Recess. The consistent Tamchcre-traincd gelding registered 3.24 4-5 from the 3.45 line and 2.52 2-5 from a 3.7 mark. To Mahanga figures on tho limit of the 3.5 Komako Handicap at Manawatu, and while he has excellent prospects of breaking his novice status, ho may again bo just unlucky enough to find Iron Man, on 12yds, his superior. To Makanga’s time record, with improve ment, is as under: — One Mile and a Quarter

BEOADCAST REVIEW. VALUABLE INFORMATION. At station 2ZO last evening, Mr. C. E. Craig, the Auckland trotting writer, gavo a broadcast review of tko prospects for to-day’s meeting at Ashhurst. The visitor roviewed the form of the various candidates fully and imparted a wealth of information respecting the merits of the horses that should prove of great assistance to listeners who will be at the meeting. Mr. Craig is a close student of trotting form and his talk ' on the subject was much appreciated. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS FOR T'RENTI-lAM The following riding engagements ; have been announced for Trcntbam: — Roy Reed: Golden Wings, La Mod- : orne, Miss Hushabye, Dole. WORK AT AWAPUNI

WELLINGTON CANDIDATES

IN ACTION.

With the Wellington meeting bein'* held at the end of the week, there was some interesting work at Awapuni yesterday, and horses claiming engagements at Trenthnm being sent along against tho watch to record times which can be taken to indicato that they arc in good nick for their engagements. The course proper, with the flags well out, was open but the going was hard and most trainers worked their horses on the plough, which was in good order. One of tho first, out was Senegal, the Silverslrcam handicap candidate, and the son of Nigger Minstrel and Kinsem, with W, .T. Broughton up, hit out boldly over seven furlongs on tho plough, being timed to cut tlie distance out in 1.36.’

Royal Jest, alone, was sprinted flown tho back stretch on the courso proper, then being cased up to finish at a good three-quarter pace. The Tribulation gelding, Roysto#, with Alan McDonald up, and Henry of Navarro (Shearman) were galloped six furlongs on the plough and after running tho first three in 40secs, they went on to complete in 1.22 3-5, lining on terms at tho post. The steeplechaser, Omco, looking particularly well, was partnered by Callamart, Broughton being on the firstnamed and Roy Reed on tho black. After once and a bit. round on the plough they were sprinted home in 41 4-5 sees, both moving nicely.

PRINCESS DOREEN GOES WELL Princess Doreen, Awapuni’s Champion Plate candidate, had Keith Yoitro in tho saddle, and she trotted round to tho Jive furlong peg, was steadied, and then jumped away smartly. The halfmile post was reached in 13 1-5, the 3-furlong peg in 2G 2-5, and tho first three furlongs she did in better than 40. She moved like a perfect piece of machinery over the last, bit and, with a determined dab at the finish, ran past the post in 1.5, going very nicely. She will be in great fettle on Friday, and those that finish in front of her will know they have been in a race. K. Yoitro will bo on top at Trentham.

Catalogue (Yoitrc), Princess Doreen’s stablematc, cut half a mile out alone in 52 2-5. He has come on a lot lately.

Romeo (Gomm) and Lady Court (C. Thomson) were associated in a halfmile flutter on the course proper, and there was little between them at the finish after taking 40 for the last three. All eyes were centred upon La Moderne and Inflation when they came out on to the plough. Chisholm was up on the filly and Gamut on the colt. They moved round to the six furlong mark and hopped away without delay, La Modcrne beginning verey smartly to take up tho role of pacemaker. She established a two-lengths lead and put the first three furlongs behind her in 38 secs, and the half mile in 52 secs. Inflation was ftill two lengths away from, lior at the entrance to the straight but the filly did better than he over the last bit, retaining licr advantage without- trouble. They broke 1.20 for tho full distance —a nice effort. La Mloderuo figures in the St. Leger Stakes on Friday and S. Reed will pilot her. Inflation is in t-ho Thompson Handicap and St. Leger, and it is not certain which lie is going to start in but it is probable ho will parade for (lie St. Leger. T. Green will have the ride on him in which ever event he starts.

Leisure’s task was six furlongs on tho plough and she cut the distance out in 1.22 2-5, after taking, 41 2-5 for the .first half of the journey. Reed was in the saddle.

Easterly (Bradley) could not foot it with Chief Marionette (Broughton) over the last three of seven furlongs on the plough. Chief Marionette moved attractively to record 1.34 3-5 for the full distance and 1.20 -1-5 for the last six furlongs. Mercian Prince (W. T. McDowell) was holding Advontus (Iv. Voitre) at the end of seven furlongs on the plough and they were not extended at. any stage to break 1.39 for the journey. Golden Chant (McCormack), winner

of the maiden event; at Bulls, was given a comparatively light task, and

after running the first two of five furlongs ou the bit, the daughter of Arnusto and Conchita was speeded up and was timed to run the last two furlongs in better than 27 sees.

Haul bowline (Rood) and Bcaconsficld (Broughton) finished in that order at the end of seven furlongs, which took 1.35. Haulbowlino was doing it very easily at the finish. The first furlong look 14 secs; two 27 1-5, and tho halfmile 52 4-5 secs, NOT IN AT WELLINGTON. Figuring m the Wellington acceptances are thro horses from A. Cook’s stable at Te Awamut-u—King’s Knave, Impost o, and Bambury—but these horses will not be on hand. Cook was very surprised to find that King’s Knave had been paid up for the Thompson, as his mission is tho Olunemuri Cup at home on Friday, but apparently his owner, who made the acceptance, misunderstood tho trainer's recommendation to accept only with Impasto. The later’s public form at Te Raua has now also spelled (he end to his trip. Bambury was li ft in the BE Leger in error. WELLINGTON PENALTIES. Horses who have won races since the declaration of weights for the first day of the Wellington meeting have incurred penalties for hack events m which they are engaged.
