“Gaieties of 1933

OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT To-night "The Gaieties of 1933,’’ the excellent musical comedy company that has just concluded a highly successful season at tho Wellington Grand Opera House, is to commence its short Tun of two nights and a matinee at the Opera House, Palmerston North. The initial production, “A Brighter 1933,” is headed by Fred Bluett, Amy Rochelle, Rene Rich, Wally Reynolds, and the Flying Wartons. This strong company of English and Australian stars has been most successful for the last three years in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, presenting a type of show that makes a strong appeal to lovers oi good flesh-and-blood entertainment. Features of the various productions are gorgeous song scenas, snappy sketches, brilliant instrumental playing, astounding acrobatic feats and clever dancing. Comedy, of course, predominates, as in times like these playgoers are looking for laughter and brightness. In this regard Fred Bluett, Wally Reynolds and Syd Wheeler have splendid opportunities, and keep the audience in roars of laughter with their comicalities. An artist who should reccivo a warm welcome is Miss Amy Rochelle, the queen of variety, whoso fine soprano voice and clever characterisations have made her name a household word. A violinist of distinction, Miss Reno Rich, is with the company. This charming young Australian is breaking her journey to America, and will appear with the "Gaieties” during their New Zealand tour. Sensational and thrilling is the act of the Flying Wartons, Continental artists brought to this country by Wirth Bros. Other prominent members of the cast are Adie Codings, soubrette; Robert Raymond, baritone; the Superb Six, ballerinas; the Genettes, simultaneous dancers; Peril and Bonzo, knockabout comedy acrobats; Chorrie Armstrong, danseuse; Nancy Whitty, platinum blonde; and the Ten Persian Acrobatic Marvels. The beautiful dresses were designed by Mile. Bertini, the general staging is on an elaborate scale, and there is an up-to-the-minute orchestra. Pantomime is to bo the attraction on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. when "Dick Whittington and His Cat” is to be submitted. The season concludes on Wednesday night with an entirely now revue. Seats inaye be reserved without extra charge at the Central Booking Office.
