Correspondents are beginning to get uncensored impressions out oi' Germany which reveal an extraordinary state of political and social chaos.

One correspondent states that it would defy the ablest statistician to estimate how many opponents of Hitlerism are in Prussian gaols or in hiding. The number must run into tens of thousands.

The Daily Telegraph’s Berlin correspondent says: “Tho youthful elements in the storm troops have allowed their electioneering success to go to thoir heads. Their insolence is disturbing every really solid institution in Germany. Young men who should still he apprenticed in factories are parading the streets wearing fantastic breeches and boots with two revolvers in their waist belt 3. If two bravados wish to cross a crowded street they merely give tho Hitler salute and all traffic stops. Their opponents, whether Communists or Catholics, are so terrified at tho reprisals that all hope of effective protest i 3 gone. “In certain parts of Berlin tho Jews have only to walk in the streets to be liable to assassination or degrading insult. I watched a squad of youths walk into a shop and demand its instant closure because ono of its directors happened to be a Jew. The Brown Shirts closed a single store in tho Charlottenburg district and threw 1500 girls out of employment. “Hitler’s authority, however, seems to extend beyond Berlin as the Nazi attacks on departmental stores and Jewish shops have now ceased. They caused alarm to Hitler’s more intelligent disciples who know how vital a part the Jews play in the economic life of Germany. Jews control 19 per cent, of the corn trade, 57 per cent, of the metal trade and 31 per cent, of the textile trade though Jows constitute less than 1 per cent, of Germany’s population,”

The Daily Herald's correspondent, who has reached Prague from Berlin, says that only by leaving Germany is lie able to reveal the details of the Nazi torturings of opponents. A number of Communists were thrust into a room and forced to raise their arms and shout: "We love Hitler," and sing Nazi songs. Then they were terribly beaten with whips and truncheons. Ono of them died. One Roichsbanner man was locked in a cell where he could neither sit nor lie down and kept there for two days. He was dragged out periodically to be kicked and illtrcated. His hair was shaved and the scalp painted whito. He was only released when he signed, an undertaking to remain politically neutral. These and many moro cases occurred in Berlin. Thcro were similar torturings in most provincial centres. The Mayors of two suburbs and other officials wore arrested. Three men were found shot in tho Wansee. Two Communists were killed at Lunbaca attempting to escape. The Bavarian Minister, Herr Stuetzei Schaefer, chairman of the People’s party, and Herr Ostermeycr, a councillor, were dragged from their houses at night and maltreated. General von Epp’s orders to arrest Communists and Socialists in several towns was strictly executed. Sheer Terrorism. The Daily Telegraph's special correspondent, who has just returned after an extended tour of Germany, says that tho country is living in a stato of terrorism. Nobody knows what the outcome will be, least of all the Hitlerites. Undoubtedly tho Hitler-von Papen Government w T as the result of a stampede. Both thought General von Schleicher was planning a coup d’etat. Now tho von Papen-Hugcnberg group fear they may be pushed aside by the ( Brown Shirts. The Nationalists’ plan of checking Hitler by holding the koy position in Cabinet has been effectively quashed by tho fire in the Reichstag. They are now satisfied that Captain Goering arranged tho outbreak in order to capturo tho wavering Roichstag votes for Hitlerism. No responsible person in Germany believes that tho Communists caused tho fire. Tho Times Berlin correspondent says: After hearing a dozen shots a nightwatchman at Spandau found the blind-folded and bare-footed body of a murdered man.
