Maintenance Unpaid
MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT. ‘'This is the class of man we want an institution for —where he is made to work and the proceedings used to support his family,” declared Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when Cla Clarence Wm. Hobman, commission agent, formerly of Palmerston North, and now of Martinborough, was called to answer complaints of being £22 in arrears with maintenance in respect of Ms wife and £6 10s in respect of his children. Mr MV. Hooker, maintenance officer, declared that Hobman had made up his mind not to support his wife and children. Mr J. A. Grant, for defendant, staled that defendant had been arrested on December 24 in respect of an order regarding past arrears of maintenance, and on release had found his job gone. Mr Hooker declared that Hobman could have gone back to his work but had left on his own accord. The trouble was another lady in the pictui c.
Mr Grant: Well, she’s out of the picture now. His Worship sentenced defendant to one month’s imprisonment, to be released on payment of arrears.
