GLORIOUS SUNSHINE FAVOURS CHILDREN’S ANNUAL SPORTS

Success of Feilding’s Fixture

KEENEST COMPETITION PEE VAILS IN CLOSE FINISHES

A cloudless sky and hot sunshine welcomed the annual athletic sports fixture of the Feilding District PuDlic Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association held on Kowhai park on Saturday. Well before the starting time, which was lixed for 9 o’clock, hundreds of children representing twenty-live primary schools flooded Feilding’s picturesque recreation ground, ready to match their particular athletic attainments against all comers. Carrying the colours of their particular schools and carefully dressed for the occasion the children presented a striking picture of healthy youth and with the schools’ flags waving in the gentle breeze against a background of native bush and a spacious vclvet-like lawn, the scene was delightful to behold.

Throughout the morning the many and varied events were despatched with a precision which spoke volumes for the efficient organisation. Teachers certainly had a task in keeping track of close upon .1000 children and their work made possible an uninterrupted programme. Luncheon and refreshments were taken as the opportunity offered and as the afternoon progressed children's thoughts turned to how their particular schools were faring in the four competitions. As soon as it was known that very few points separated the leading schools the excitement grew to know no bounds as the relay races were despatched. Much depended upon these events and the competitors were not without generous encouragement from both adults and juveniles. Altogether it was one of the best meetings yet and the day in the sunshine was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The four trophies up for competition were: The Guthrie Shield for boys (open to all schools); the McCorkiudalo Rose Bowl for girls (open to all schools); the Country Schools’ Shield (open to all country schools); and the W. A. Collins Memorial Sliield (open to sole charge schools). Originally the sports had but the two trophies, the Guthrie Shield and the McCorkindale Rose Bowl and the competition offered by the two Feilding schools was such as to decide the organisation to set about securing a shield for the country schools. The advent of this trophy encouraged the representatives of the country schools and the results pointed to the need of a shield to meet the requirements of the smaller solo charge schools and this gave birth to the W. A. Collins Memorial Shield. Saturday’s gathering sa’. r the shields change ownership, Manchester street taking the Guthrie Shield, Lytton street the Rose Bowl, Pohangina school the Collins Memorial Shield, while Tokorangi and Kopane schools will have to share the Country Schools’ .Shield. The points gained by the respective schools in each competition are given below: — Guthrie Shield.

The visitors during the meeting included the Hon. G. J. C'obbe, Minister of Justice, and Mr. E. F. Hemingway, chairman of the Wanganui Education Board. Messrs. G. J. Fitzpatrick and J. Penney (chairmen) respectively of the Manchester street and Lytton street schools, Feilding, took an active part in the proceedings. The association’s president, Mr. T. K. Hay, had under him a most willing band of oflicials who co-operated most efficiently for the despatch of the sports. The organisation was a credit to all and Mr. E. 11. Lange’s secretarial duties were made light of so complete was the control.

The refreshment stalls on tho grounds were controlled by the ladies representing the two Feilding schools and they had a particularly busy day. Ice creams were in demand and fresh supplies had to be requisitioned.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. T. K. Hay, president of the controlling organisation, expressed the thanks of the committee for the splendid co-operation displayed by all associated with the gathering, mentioning the work of the teachers whose assistance had been invaluable. Mr. Hay then invited Mr. E. F. Hemingway, of Patea. chairman o£ the Wanganui Edu*

cation Board, who is patron of the association, to address the gathering and hand over the trophies. Mr. Hemingway, who was greeted with applause, stated how ho extremely happy he had been in being privileged to take part in such an extraordinarily successful gathering. Ho questioned whether one would lind such a large and so efficiently handled schools’ sports meeting outside of Bedding, and he offered his congratulations to the town for its distinction in this connection. It stood out high above all others and there was nothing better in his opinion from the North Capo to the Bluff. Ho assured tlic gathering that the Wanganui Education Board was cut to do everything in its power to assist such gatherings for they undoubtedly played a very important part in fitting the child for the mental studies which school work required. A child fit and healthy in body was bound to have a clear brain and an active mental capacity and any efforts directed towards giving children healthy outdoor exercise was to be commended. Ho fully believed in such gatherings as that organised in Bedding and was confident that they contributed much to tho physical and mental development of the children of the district. There was no sport in the world worth calling sport, outside amateur sport and he was sure that all parents present obtained immense pleasure from watching tho children participating in such health-giving recreation as that ■witnessed that day. He cautioned the children to ever remember that in their games and at play they were to play for the game’s sake and not for the prize.

Touching upon Bedding’s representation on the Wanganui Education Board, the speaker said that he remembered the late Mr.- F. Pirani, who was undoubtedly a great educationalist. He had served this district well and his very useful work had been taken up by Mr. Hugh Mclntyre, a gentleman who had always manifested a deep and practical interest in education. Bedding continued to be fortunate in its representation and to-day had Mr. J. S. Tingey sitting as a member of the board. Concluding, Mr. Hemingway said that tho Wanganui Education Board had a motto, “Deeds, not words.” (Applause.) The trophies were then handed over to tho representatives of the successful schools.
