Mrs. P. E. Simpson and her niece, Miss Graeo Cumings, of Makino, arc spending a holiday with relatives at Lower Hutt and Petono.

Her friends will learn with regret, that Mrs. Lawrence Pearce, Lethbridge street, Makino, is confined to her bed and will wish her a speedy return to normal health. Miss Alison West-Watson, youngestdaughter of the Bishop of Christchurch, will” leave for England this month to pursue her studies at Oxford Gniversity. The Misses Joan and Betty Rayner, the New Zealand “Troubadors,” after their season in London, are shortly starting on a motor caravan tour of Britain. Mrs. Lionel Abraham and her daughter, Mrs. Rupert Ashworth, of Te Kuit.i, have returned to Palmerston North from a visit to Paokakariki. At the Wanganui A. and P. Association’s recent show, tho following points prizes were awarded: Cooking section, Mrs. S. Wiggins, Ashhurstj sauces, Mrs. A. E. Humphreys, Fcilding. Miss Sheila Hudson, of England, who has been the guest of their Excellencies, Lord Blod-isloe and the Lady Bledisloc, at Wellington, left this week to stay with her aunt, Mrs W. Watson, of Heretaunga. The death occurred this week at her residence, Keith Street, Wanganui, of Mrs. T. E. Smart, after an illness of some months’ duration. Mrs Smart was the mother of Mrs P. Campbell, of Rongotea. Tho wife of the Bishop of Stcphany, who, in common with many other noted clerics, is a great walker, has been experimenting with a pedometer. She has made the interesting discovery that she walks each day, in shopping and about the house, an average of seven miles. Another success has been achieved by a pupil of the Palmerston North Girls’ High School, Miss Lorna Sheppard, a daughter of Mr. F. J. Sheppard, of Palmerston North, who was dux of the school last year and has been warded the Robert Bell scholarship at Canterbury College, and also the Macmillan ■ Brown Bursary, to bo held at Connon Hall, the hostel of Canterbury College. The value of the scholarship is £SO per annum for three years, and the bursary £3O per annum for three years. The death occurred recently at her residence, “Whcrehiwi,” New Plymouth, of Mrs. Caroline Adelaide Howell, at the age of 75 years. The late Mrs. Howell, who before her marriage was a Miss Gason, was born in Ireland and came to New Zealand at an early age. She lived for a time in the Chatham Islands, where her father was a magistrate. At that time Te Kooti escaped from imprisonment, and during tho trouble that arose she was sheltered by friendly Natives. Later she went to Now Plymouth, where she was married about 56 years ago. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Howell farmed at Rahotu, and about 1900 they returned to New Plymouth. The late Mrs. Howell was the mother of 12 children, 11 of whom are living. Four sons sorved in tho war, one being killed at Gallipoli. One of her daughters is Mrs David Howdcn, of Pahiatua.
