Erratic Prices at Feilding Stock Sale

GOOD VALUES DESPITE DEPRESSED INDUSTRY

FAT SHEEP BELOW SCHEDULE The reputation Fcilding possesses as a good stock selling centre finds support in the experience of vendors that no matter what the state of the industry good prices generally prevail. Yesterday was no exception to the rule as far as sheep values were concerned and the heavy yarding attracted a large attendance of farmers, dealers and others who followed values with a close interest. In the case of breeding ewes the younger stock were cheap when compared with the values realised for 4 and 5-year lots and in the light oi existing conditions vendors cannot DC other than satisfied with their realisations. The depressed state of the meat market did not appear to have any great influence upon prices paid for store lambs which realised in the case of wether lots up to Ss (Id.

A particularly heavy yarding of fa! sheep was offered exporters’ representatives who were able to buy under schedule rates in the case of l'at lambs. Comparing these prices with those obtained for store lines it is difficult to appreciate the basis upon which values arc arrived at. There appears only one conclusion and that is that, stores are too dear.

Generally values reflected no real appreciation of the state of the industry and the falling tendency of values on the outside markets. Of the 2-tooth owes, a special entry on account of Mr W. M. Stewart, of Waiata, realised l<ss 6d, while another sale made 17s. Beef was quiet with realisations at schedule rates, while store cattle attracted little interest. A small entry of dairy stock sold at late rates.
