Palmerston North River Board Meets

The monthly meeting of the Palmers* ton North River Board was held yesterday, the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford) presiding. Also present were Messrs G. Tremaine, C. Anderson, J. Batchelar, W. R. Hopcroft, W. L, Fitzhcrbert and J. Hodgens. The acting-engineer reported as follows: —No. 1 plant is still engaged in construction of No. 4 regulation groyne. Very good progress has been made with this work. Nino front piles and 14 back piles have been driven and braces affixed; also top horizontal members on three spans. This greatly facilitates the work of putting on other horizontal members, which will be commenced when the remainder of the piles have been driven. No. 2 plant has now negotiated the river channel and it. is at Fitzroy diversion channel, where constructional work will be started immediately. All timber required for this work has been secured and deposited on the site of the worn, Several hood freshes have been recorded during the past month, tho highest recorded being 6ft. 9ins. on January 7. Although considering tho dry spell, the Tiver has not yet reached summer level, 'me dry spell has had a detrimental effect on some of the willow plantations, quite a number of young plants having died out. This is unavoidable. Taking the plantations on a whole, they are very good, considering the high temperatures that have oeen experienced lately. Mr. Hopcroft reported that farmers were doing their best to get rid of goats rue bordering the river. The suggestion was made that men should be employed under the No. 5 scheme to clear away goats rue a:ong the river banks. The chairman agreed that men would do more good in this way than on some other work on which they had been employed. It was agreed that the engineer be instructed to obtain from the certifying officer of the Labour Department authority to employ men under the No. 5 scheme in cutting goats rue ! .n the board’s area. The board decided to write to the Audit Department, stating that it considered the charge of £3B Os Od excessive for the amount of audit work that had been done.
