1931 REVIEWED. In a survey of American business during 1931, the Newspaper Publishers’ Association established the fact that each of 436 companies spent £12,500 or over on newspaper advertising. The aggregate outlay of these companies in newspaper advertisements was £37,150,000. It is interesting to note that the average expenditure per advertiser was slightly higher in 1931 than in 1930. The greatest increases were in the tobacco and wearing apparel industries. Tobacco companies invested nearly £1,250,000 more in newspaper advertising in 1931 than in 1930. Tho general analysis of newspaper advertising in various parts of the United States revealed the fact that in districts where the volume of newspaper publicity was above the average, business returns were also above tho average for the nation as a whole.
