National Flower Show For Palmerston North

WITH SEVERAL CONFERENCES Another horticultural honour has been conferred upon Palinorston North in the decision to hold the next National Flower Show in this city. The other horticultural event of note will be the holding of the National Daffodil Show in Palmerston North in September next. Tho 1933 National Flower Show has just concluded in Wellington, and was an outstanding success. The many beautiful blooms, more especially perhaps tho begonias, hydrangeas and gladioli, caused many expressions of admiration. There were also special and unusual exhibits, such as those of tobacco, tung oil, flax and citrus fruits, and special interest was shown in the displays of native plants. These native plants were particularly referred to by Mr. F. J. Nathan, president of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, who presided at the opening corcmony. Ho remarked that it seemed a pity that people concentrated their attention so much on importations when thero was such beauty to be found in tho native flora. He remarked, too, on the display of begonias, saying that he doubted whether anyone present had ever seen a finer lot. Messrs. A. J. Shailor and Son (Palmerston North) competed successfully in tho dahlia section, taking tho two most important honours, tho open class with a magnificent display of 21 blooms, and the display arranged for effect to cover not rnoro than 100 feet. The 193-1 show is to be held in January, but the exact date has yet to be fixed. Tho Palmerston North Horticultural Society is to bo asked to cooperate. In addition there will be held the annual conferences of the Parks and Reserves Association, Nurserymen’s and Seed Trades’ Association, and tho Institute of Horticulture.
