Zealandia Handicap to Paganelli Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. The first day of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s Summer meeting tvas held to-day in brilliant weather. The track was very hard and dry. The attendance was large but the totalisator handled only £20362 15s as against £30076 15s for the first day last year, the decrease being £9714. Anniversary Day, however, fell on Saturday in 1932.

NOTED TRAINER PASSES', J. A. (JACK) FARMER. The death occurred at the Palmerston North Hospital on Saturday of Mr. J. A. (Jack) Farmer, a weiwuiown North Island horse trainer. Deceased, for a number of years, acted as private trainer to tho Wairarapa sportsman, W. E. Bid will, and during tho period had some champions through his hands, among them being those wonderful horses .Elevation, uravitation and Provocation. With Elevation the late Jack Fanner won the N.Z. Derby, Canterbury Cup, C.J.C. Challenge Stakes (all in 1907) and Palmerston North Stakes. Provocation was the champion two-year-old of his year (1907-08) and it is doubtful if his equal, as a two-year-old, has been seen since. Among his victories were the Wellesley Stakes, C.J.C. Champagne Stakes, Manawatu Stakes, Fcilding Stakes, Jackson Stakes and North Island Challenge Stakes. Gravitation also scored in classic events, -winning, among others, tho Jackson Stakes. Suggestion, a ■high-class horse, won the Awapuni Gold Cup in 1925, whilo Tribulation scored in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas. Mr. Farmer was always of a quiet disposition and among his fellow trainers was regarded with much affection. To his many friends his death, though anticipated, will bo deeply regretted.
