Fish From New Zealand
CUSTOMS RAISE FINE POINT.
SYDNEY, Jan. 26.
The Customs authorities have been set a problem over the fish cargo brought from New Zealand waters by the trawler Alfie Cam. The vessel has arrived in Australia, but called at Manukau to land a man for medical treatment. Having touched New Zealand, the point is whether the fish in her holds, largely New Zealand varieties, which if brought here by a trading vessel would be subject to 10 per cent, primage duty, is now liable to the duty. Customs officers boarded the Cam and sent a report to Canberra, but the general opinion is that duty will not be imposed.
The Alfie Cam (282 tons) which is owned by Cam and Sons, left Sydney three weeks ago to try out a new scheme for catching fish off tho New Zealand coast for Australia. The crossing of the Tasman occupied five days end the fishing was commenced off Three Kings and Cape Maria Van Diemen. Rough weather hampered fishing operations at tho start, but later the trawler worked south and excellent results were achieved.
The vessel unexpectedly put into Manukau Harbour on January 15th to land a member of her crew, who was suffering from a septic, hand. But for the need of landing the man it is considered likely that the trawler would have completed her fishing and returned to Australia without putting in to any Now Zealand port. The man, who was brought ashore for treatment at the hospital, was Walter John Carey, aged 50, of Auburn, Sydney. Mr Carey had his right hand injured in the engine-room and when the wound became septic the Captain W. Reid, thought it advisable to put the man ashore for expert treatment. On admission to the hospital Mr Carey underwent a minor operation and his condition was soon satisfactory.
