Smith) reported that a peat tiro on the Ashiea road, Tokomaru, was causing a lot of troublo to the power lino on that road. The Arc was in the peat round tho poles and had burned the latter through. Tho poles have been replaced and sand has been placed round them to protect them, true ground is practically all peat in this locality and in places a stick cr.u be pushed four foot down. The instituto could not have kept the flag flying but for tho Government subsidy of £IOO a year, which it was hoped would be continued, stated Mr. F. J. Nathan, of Palmerston North, presiding at the annual conference of tho New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, which opened in Wellington this week. Legislation had been enacted in Canada to meet the position, and something of the kind was needed here. The chairman of directors of tho company almost invariably calls at the company’s oflico at Whangarci on the nineteenth day of each month to sign drafts on London for advance payments to suppliers. This month, however, without the slightest thought of tho exchango rate being altered, ho called in on the twentieth, by w'hich time the rate had been increased to ,25 per cent. The result was that tho company has benefited by just over £SOO.
