Mayor Pursues Cause of Unemployed

'(JOBS TO WELLINGTON TO-DAY Not satisfied with tho position of relief available for tho unemployed in j?alnierSton North, the Mayor (Mr. A. E. bjansford) is proceeding to Wellington this morning to interview tho Minister. Ycstorday ho sent a further tolegram pointing out that the certifying officer had received no further instructions, and adding that if tho Minister compared the payments made to all classes of unemployed in Auckland and Dunedin with Palmerston North, he would appreciate the cause of unrest in Palmerston North. No reply to the telegram had been received at midnight last night, hence tho Mayor’s decision to go to Wellington.

SERIOUS POSITION ON WEST COAST Por Press Association GREYMOUTII, Last Night. A largo public meeting representing local bodies and unemployed was held to-night protesting against tho inadequacy of the relief allocations. The speakers included the Mayors of Greymouth, Runanga and Brunner, the chairman of the Cobden Town Board, representatives of tho county, and unemployed and Labour organisations. A resolution proposed that the meeting “strongly protests against tho inadequate relief money in this district, and urging the board to make an immediate increase.” The Minister is to bo asked to place Greymouth in the same category as tho main centres for relief purposes, as tho cost of living was far greater than in the cities. It was also suggested that ho be asked to review all schemes with a view to removing the hardship of the stand-down week, but not at the expense of the other three w'ceks. An amendment, however, was carried as follows: “That this meeting mako a definite request to the Government at once to cancel all relief work, and in lieu thereof pay sustenance as provided by the Unemployment; Act.”
