The former took the first strike and batted all the afternoon, and at the close of play still had three wickets in hand for the total of 147 runs. United Maori Party proved easy victims for Young Maori Party. , United Maori Party made 50 runs in both innings, ■while Young Maori Party knocked up 58 rims in one innings, thus securing an outright -win in th<s one day. The first representative match of the season to be played locally was staged on Easton Park yesterday, when the Foxton reps, played a return match with Horowhenua. In their first meeting at Levin the Horowhenua A team easily defeated the “locals,” but in the return match yesterday the “locals”’ turned the tables. The visitors’ combination, however, was practically a B team, as their A’s were playing Manawatu. Winning the toss, Horowhenua elected to take first strike, and ran up a total of 77 runs (Wallace 21, Walker 16, Harvey 13). Eoxton replied with 65 runs, Woods (24) being the only player to reach double figures. In their second inning 3 Horowhenua compiled 109 runs (Evans 27, Bishop 27, Watts 18, Prance 15). Requiring 122 runs to -win in about l:i hours, Poxton commenced their second strike, and at the drawing of stumps had lost 5 wickets for 125 runs, thus winning the match by the small margin of four nms. The chief scorers were Woods (14), Hirin; (28), Nichols (35), Newth (23), Roorc (18). It was a great effort on the part of the "locals,” each batsman going strongly for the bowling. four or live minutes to go, Poxton wanted about 10 runs to win, and amid vreat excitement from the “bank” these nms and three to spare were secured -just on the call of time. The funeral of the late Mr. Alexander Howie Wilson took place yesterday afternoon. There was a large number

of relatives and friends from all parts of the district in attendance, 1 and thh casket was covered with many beautiful floral tributes —silent testimony to the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The services at the house and graveside were conducted by Rev. Mr. Lcishman (Presbyterian minister, of Shannon). The pall-bearers were Messrs. W. Bowc and D. H. Campbell (Marotiri), W. Jenkins (Marton), li. Chisholm (Huntervillc), J. Fiyffc (Marton), and W. Young (Wanganui).

The Maranui (Wellington) Club s champion surf team visited I oxton during the week-end and ou Monday gave an interesting and instructive display on the ocean beach. There was a very large number of residents aud holiday-makers present to witness the demonstration. The Mayor (Mr. M. E. Pcrreau), in welcoming' the visitors, congratulated the Maranui Club (New Zealand champions) on their past success and expressed the hope that the local club would benefit considerably from the demonstration. He also thanked the visitors to the seaside for the excellent' support they had accorued the Foxtou burl’ and Life Sa' mg Club. The team was also welcomed by Mr. J. Linldater, M.P., who paid a special tribute to the local club, expressing the opinion that the lecoid crowds which had patronised the Foxton beach this season were due, to a considerable extent, to the establish.ment of a surf and life saving club locally. Life saving in New Zealand had been responsible for a great reduction in deaths by drowning and tiie speaker made a strong appeal for support for the club. Mr. W. C. Collier, president of the Manawatu Centre, also welcomed the visitors. Alt'. Queree, president of the Maranui Life baling Club, acknowledged the warm weleom? extended by the various speakers aud said that lie was very pleased to note the beneficial results which had followed the visit of the Maranui Club’s representatives to Foxtou some years ago. A pairs tourney was played on the local green on Monday when there were 12 paws on the green and five games of ten heads were played. Four pair* were present from Palmerston North. The draw resulted in Bayliss playing, Trueman, Bayliss winning by a margin of two points in five heads. Bayliss then played Ramsay and was beaten by a good margin, Ramsay and his partner, M-owlcm, thus being the runnersup. The special competition conducted by the club for a cash prize resulted in W. Trueman, with E 122, being declared the winner, the Palmerston North visit-, mg bowlers undertaking the supervision of the final of the competition.
