Palmerston North Hospital Board Meets

REPORTS AND CORRESPONDENCE CONSIDERED. The monthly meeting of the Palmerston North Hospital Board was held yesterday, Mr. J. K. Hornblow presiding. Also present were Mrs. L. A. Abraham and Messrs. F. J. Ryder, G. P. Catlcy, A. E. Mansford. M. A. Moody, D. Collis, V. E. Smith, J. Boyce, W. Howell and R. L. C. Aitchison. Leave of absence was granted Mesrs. J. A. Nash, M.P., G. A. Monk and L. T. McLean. "I have to expres regret that the “I have to express regret that the make a contribution of £SO towards tbe cost of the district nursing service provided at Otaki by the department," wrote the Director-General of Health. "I should be glad if this matter could be reconsidered, as the department is not asking your board to do more than other boards are doing in connection with Maori nursing services. If the board is not prepared to contribute on the reasonable basis suggested, the department will possibly be compelled to withdraw its services, leaving the board the necessity of making contribution."

On the chairman’s suggestion, the board decided to adhere to its previous decision, Mr. Hornblow commenting he was of the opinion that the department would continue to keep the services of a nurse in the district.

Inter alia, the managing secretary (Mr. A. J. Phillipps) reported : "Steps are now being taken to reduce the number of No. 5 men, as wo have hardly sufficient work available to keep the present number of men occupied. I am, however, trying to utilise the services of as many men as possible. During the farm manager’s absence at the present time on annual leave, I have temporarily arranged for the majority of the men who are employed at the fann to do their relief work at the hospital, cleaning all the open drains around the hospital grounds. The painting work on the Maternity Home staff quarters has been carried on with during the month and is now nearly com. pleted. ’ ’ The following statistics were sot our in tho report of the medical superintendent (Dr. F. G. Ward) : patients remaining in hospital, 30/11/02, 186; patients admitted during December, 193 ; patients discharged during . December, 207 ; patients died, 10; patients remaining in hospital, 31/12/32, 162 ; daily average number of occupied beds, 176.19. Maternity home : admissions during month, 15 ; births, 15 ; attended ante-natal clinic, 31 ; remaining in home, 31/12/32, mothers S, babies 7. The matron (Miss -T. N. McGhic) reported that the health of the staff was good. Nurse Reid commenced her maternity training on December 20 and Nurse Sinkinson completed her maternity training on that date. The following donations had been received: flowers, Mrs. Dalefield; lamb, Mr. Oliver j toys, Mr. D. Bett.
