German Gets Decision Over George Cook
IN SPECTACULAR TWELVE-ROUND 2JOUT. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Tuesday, 9 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 24. At the Albert Hall, in a twelve-round bout, the German, Walter Nousel, outpointed George Cook, the ex-Australian heavyweight. Cook was accompanied by his wifo who kissed him twice as he entered tho ring.
Ncusel opened by punching powerfully and rattled Cook with threo uppercuts. The Australian was fleet-footed and punished the German with liis favourite left hook to tho jaw. Neusei exploited his longer reach, scoring several lefts but failed to evade Cook and stopped repeated heavy rights to tho jaw. Cook’s greater experience often nonplussed the German. The fight continued even. Cook in the seventh forced the German to his corner and sent a terrific right to thte' jaw, Ncusel’s counters not affecting the stocky Australian who was even more vigorous in tho fighting that followed. Cook was magnificent, leaving nothing to chance and exhibiting sound defence. Cook in the ninth rushed the German to tho ropes but was steadied by a tremendous left hook, the German scoring with both hands while in tho tenth vicious rights sent tho Australian’s head back. He was apparently beaten but ho returned fighting liko a fury. In the last round both stood exchanging punches. Cook in his eagerness to land a terrific right in the twelfth, swung himself to the floor. The decision was greeted by several minutes of booing. When it was announced that Cook was thirty-five today tlic Australian had a wonderful ovation.
