NAPIER ACCEPTANCES DUE TO-DAY Acceptances for lire Napier Park carnival meeting are due to-day. MELBOURNE CUP WINNER It is now stated to bo improbable that Peter Pan will bo raced at the Victorian autumn meetings. The fact that, he is not engaged in the V.R.C. St. Lcgcr is no doubt one of the reasons why he may not include Flcmington in his autumn campaign. Peter Pan is engaged in the A.J.C. St. Lcger, but prior to tho classic race being decided at Randwick ho will have an opportunity to contest woight-for-age races at Boschill and Warwick Farm. RACING FIXTURES. Jan. 28: Napier Park K.C. WOODVILLE DISTRICT JOCKEY CLUB NOMINATIONS FOR AUTUMN MEETING The Woodville District Jockey Club’s autumn moeting is to be held on Wednesday and Thursday, Febmary 22 and 23, and' nominations for al events, including tho Maiden Stakes and Novice Plate, •will claim tho attention of owners and trainers on Friday, February 3, up to 9 a.m. The club lias drawn up an attractive programme with the Woodvillo and Kuahine Handicaps as the principal events on the openingday and the Autumn and Telegraph Handicaps as the “legs of the sec-ond-day doublo.’’ Tho course has never been in better order and owners need not have any anxiety as to the galloping surface that will be provided for them. With the Foxton, Daimevirke and Pahiatua meotings postponed until a later date in the season, the Woodville meeting should attract particular interest both on the part of those actively concerned in the Sport of Kings and those who just go for the “fun of the thing.” The club has no less than 24 looseboxes in its town stables and a similar number at tno racecourse and these will be available for horses at a price calculated to cover only straw and necessary labour. The Woodville Club was one of the first in 'the land to recognise the possibilities of the wiu-and-place system of betting and it is more than likely that this will be the system available to the public on February 22 and 23.

CAREER OP I.HCUI.LUS The career of Luculkis, whose death was recently recorded, furnishes a pointed illustration of what may happen in the life of a stallibn when matters are at zero so far as the animal winning a good place on the sires’ list is concerned (states a Northern exchange). Bred in Germany, Lucullus was exported to India for racing, but he proved such a pronounced, disappointment that ho was not considered" worthy of a nomination for a chargers’ race at the Toilygunge gymkhana meeting, where tho first prizes were little

silver eufis of the value of £3 3s. In tho hope that Lucullus could be sold as a -stallion ho was shipped to England, but in the one season he stood at tho Cobham Stud only two mares were on his list. The Indian syndicate interested in his ownership -were so disappointed that they exchanged the black horse for a two-year-old gelding, and lio was sent to the west of Wales, but ho failed to obtain any patronageSent up to auction at Newmarket in July, 1911, he was allowed to go for tho-paltry sum of. 25. guineas, the'late Mr. J. 0. Hayward, of Greytown, New Zealand, being the purchaser. The lucky day for Lucullus to make a name for himself came when the late Mr. William Walters was to buy him for £l5O, and, with tho opportunities ho received at Glen ora Park and patronage from outsido sources, the records show that up to,tko close of rast season his progeny raced in New Zealand and Australia had won prize money to the amount of over £129,000.

Such is the remarkable and romantic story attached to the career of Lucullus, which may be accepted as a good reminder not to condemn a horse as a sire until ho has been properly tested.
