Manawatu Cricketers Beat Horowhenua

NARROW VICTORY IN RETURN MATCH. Winning by 14 runs on tho first innings, Manawatu cricket representatives defeated Horowhenua in their return annual one-day match played at Terrace End Park yesterday. In their earlier match this season, played at Levin, Horowhenua were tho winners.

Horowhenua won the toss and elected to have first use of tho wicket. Brown and F. Baumber opened and a useful partnership ensued, 51 being on the board before a separation was effected. Crammond replaced Baumber and quickly got into his stride, hitting up a good 76, including one six and 14 fours, before being stumped by Oliver. Tho innings closed after three and a quarter hours, for 180, K. Hatch (four for 31) and Diedrich (three for 54) being the most successful bowlers. Manawatu went to tho wickets after the luncheon adjournment, Oliver and McLaren taking strike to 11. Baumber and de Clifford. Oliver went in the third over, with the score at seven and his own contribution a solitary single. K. Hatch took his place and put on 41 beforo being caught off Baumber—two for 86. The wickets of C. McVicar and Mullins both fell before McLaren was sent back to the pavilion after having scored 65, in which were five fours. J. Onglcy contributed 10, and six wickets were down for 145—eight ahead of Horowhenua at the same stage. With the scoro at 167, and Diedrich and A. M. Ongley batting, the former withstood an appeal by Crammond for 1.b.w., but skied the bowler’s next delivery, to be well held by Mercer. Akuira was the incoming batsman. Fourteen runs were needed to pass Horowhenua’s total and these were not long in coming, Onglcy scoring 13 of them. The eighth wicket fell at 187, tho ninth at 192, and the last at 194. Horowhenua commenced their second innings at 5.15 p.m., but with the issue decided did not take matters seriously. Tail-endcrs in the batting order were given a chance and wickets quickly fell. The first went at two, the second at three, the third at 19 and the fourth at 20. Waldegrave’s average at this stage was three for eight. Without addition to the score tho fifth wicket fell. GAME AT WELLINGTON lOLBIRNIE BEATS MANAWATU ON FIRST INNINGS ROBERTSON BEST MANAWATU BAT Tho Kilbirnie v. Manawaitu game was commenced at Kilbirnie in fine weather with a fair pitch. Kilbirnie won tho toss and sent Manawatu to this crease -to take first strike. Ilollier and Holz opened for Manawatu but failed to get going. Robertson (80) with tho assistance of Gallichan (21) O’Kecfo (29), Lang (18) and Ongley (17) took the scoro along steadily and with Brace and Berquist putting up a useful last wicket partnership, Manawatu's innings closed at 3 o’clock for 215. Ashenden (4 for 38) and Hepburn (3 for 40) proved to be the best of the Kilbirnie bowlers. Kilbirnie’s fielding was good. Kilbirnie’s innings opened well but the tail-enders failed. Brook (109) played a valuable innings. He was aggressive at the* beginning but on nearing his century was very quiet. ■Christopherson (46) and Hepburn (34) showed form.
