Unemployed Club Conduct Fine Sports Meeting

EXCELLENT ENTERTAINMENT AT PALMERSTON SPORTSGROUND

A sports meeting—probably ono of the most ambitious yet attempted in Palmerston North —Was conducted successfully at the Sportsground yesterday afternoon under tho auspices of the Unemployed Sports Club, assisted by tho Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club and tho Kia Toa and Old Boys Clubs. There were miscellaneous events and a largo field in virtually every one.

The officials in charge, were: Chairman, Mr. H. S. D. Rennie; committee, Messrs. Stagpoole, Gibson, Cowling, Richardson, Waulds, Dixon; timekeeper, Mr. B. Crawley; judges, Mr. A. W. Travers (Wellington), and Mr. F. Hansen; referee, Mr. C. Stagpoole; starter, Mr. O. Prouse; protest committee, Messrs. Robinson and Stagpoole. Mrs. A. E. Mansford and Miss McGhie judged the baby show during tho afternoon,- while Mr. E. Burns (Pahiatua) judged the dancing, Mr. J. Stuart (Pohangina) being the piper. Tho Palmerston North City Silver Band was in attendance and rendered various items.

At a suitable juncture the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford) addressed the gathering, there being a good attendance, He stated that tho committee of the club would he thankful for the good weather which had attended their efforts, despite the threatening conditions, and paid a tribute to tho secretary (Mr. H. S. D. Rennie) who had done so much to make the meeting a shccess. Tho Mayor also thanked the committee for its donation to tho funds from tho surplus that day and addod (that tho relief committee was sorely in noed of assistance. He hoped that the namo of tho club would soon be changed with the optimistic conditions and that it would be tho Employed Club instead of tho Unemployed Sports Club. Three cheers were given for the Mayor, the Mayoress and Miss McGhie, matron at the public hospital. There was another pleasing incident, when the Mayoress was presented witH a beautiful bouquet by Olive Robinson. Mr. N. Dixon thanked Messrs. Burns and Stuart for their assistance.
