SHANNON Tho January meeting of the Shannon Women’s Institute which was held on Wednesday, 18th inst., took tho form of a complimentary afternoon given by the members to tho president and committee in appreciation of work done by them during the past year. Tiro actingpresident and committee for the aay were: Mrs. McLaggan, Mesdames Easton, Satheriey, Pope, Clarkson, Harding, Thomson and Maboy. The meeting opened iri the customary manner with tho singing of tho Institute song, after which tho minutes wero read and confirmed. A humorous recitation given by Mrs. Hcnsman was enjoyed by all. The acting president, Mrs. Mcuaggan, with Mrs. Easton at the piano, led the members in a community sing, a number of old favourites being introduced. Quito a lot of merriment was caused by a gift parcel in numerous humorously addressed wrappings, which was Anally handed to tho president, Mrs. Snelling, who found it to be a box of choice stationery. At this stage in the proceedings a few business matters were discussed and Mrs. Campbell was elected to take part in a debate to be held at tho February meeting. A very dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Misses Baxter, Mesdames Clarkson, Campbell and Burling. The table of honour looked very gay with floral decorations, including a bouquet for the president and bright Victorian posies for the committee members. The winners in a menu competition were Mesdames Bovis, Thomson, Barber and Tromewan. Keen enthusiasm, was shown in a word building test which followed, Mrs. Mitchell being the winner. The president then thanked members for the enjoyable afternoon and committee members accorded, thoir appreciation by hearty hand clapping and cheers. The acting-president responded with musical honours to the guests and a very happy aftornoon was brought to a close with the singing of tho National Anthem. CHELTENHAM Tho January meeting of the Cheltenham W.I. was held out of doors and members spent a most enjoyable day at tho home of Mrs. T. R. Taylor at Kiwitea. The garden with its rambling footpaths and quaint punga rockeries was gay with summer blooms and members of the garden circle found much to iuterest them. After lunch a visit was pair to Miss Barrett’s bee farm nearby, members enjoying tho walk through beautiful bush and fern. Later in the aftornoon tho president, Mrs. E. E. Short, announced that members of the garden circle had started a library of books on gardening and horticulture. Theso hooks would be available to all members of tho instituto. The flrst volume bad been given by Mrs. tewamson and 12 more had been donated by Mrs. V. E. Smith, the leader Of the circle. Mrs. Short mentioned with appreciation that Mrs. Smith had generously sold plants and seeds from her own garden for tho library fund and had purchased 12 valuable books with tho proceeds. A very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Swainson and Mtb. Smith. Many offers of help with the show catering were forthcoming and Anal arrangements wero made. Both luncheon and afternoon tea wero served in tho garden under a beautiful chestnut tree and wero thoroughly enjoyed by all. The meeting closed with a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs. Taylor and Miss Barrett and to tho tea hostesses. The February meeting will bo held at Mahua, Kimbolton road, the home of the president, Mrs. E. E. Short.

KIMBOLTON

The Kimboltou IV. I. held their monthly meeting in the hall on January IS, Mrs. Barnicoat presiding. On account of the weather being inclement the day previous, the picnic on the Domain ground which had been previously arranged, had to be abandoned and the members brought their children to the hall -where they wore amused with games and a scramble. Small prizes kindly donated by the members wero distributed among the little guests. Mrs. Barnicoat reminded the members of a group meeting which is to bo heia. at Mrs. E. E. Short’s on February 15. Afternoon tea was served by voluntary helpers.
