£50,000 Damage in Sydney Alone
HAWKESBURY RISES 18 FEET IN 8 HOURS MAN KILLED BY LIGHTNING Received Monday, 10.53 p.m. SYDNEY, Jan. 23. The damage in the city and suburbs to homes, shipping and other property is at present inestimable, but ’will probably exceed £60,000. Two small children playing in a storm-water channel at Canterbury were swept away by the onrush of water. A man fully clothed rushed in arid brought them out barely conscious. The Randwick racecourse is submerged to a depth of two feet. The Ilawkesbury river rose 18 feet in eight hours. To-day Richmond settlers were warned of the danger of flood. The damage to the South Coast railway is so severe that it will be four days before a through service can he restored. A man named Headway, one of a group standing in the yard of a house at Young, was killed and tho rest knocked unconscious hy lightning. This morning very heavy rain continues in the Young district.
